CLOSED: 17-year Cicada?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

These came out in mass number in our neighborhood. 1st my neighbors reported seeing them coming out from holes in the ground. Now I see them everywhere and their songs are deafening! Please help I.D.

Definitely the Periodical Cicada, but not sure which.

I'm accustomed to the 'green' Cicadas. But this is my first time seeing these with orange or red eyes. Thousands of them are seen here in my neighborhood. Even my watchdog -- actually he's a sweet big baby -- barks at the noise these Cicadas made.

I saw them hatch out in insane numbers once as well.
The ground was covered in them!
If you've ever watched the Planet Earth episode on Deciduous Forests, yep, that was totally my front yard!

Oh my! I hope someone could help confirm this so I can close this out.

Ok well after a bit of research its definitely part of the Great Southern Brood of 13 year cicadas.

Thank you LadyAshleyR. I'll have to do some research on my own. 13 years? Instead of 17th?

Yep, check out the wiki article on the periodical cicadas =3

Says the great southern brood is the only one to emerge in 2011 =3.

That's terrific info. Thank you LadyAshleyR. The Great Southern brook it's!
