Oakleaf hydrangea.

Gorgeous! I planted one last year---may have planted it in too much shade---it's pretty gangly! But it does appear to be trying to blossom, so I remain hopeful...

Conway, SC

Stono, Mine is in total shade under an oak tree. I did this because I noticed at Brookgreen Gardens all of the OL hydrangeas were under the huge old oak trees. You will have more blooms each year. I did not cut mine back. Don't know if that is right or wrong.

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

BSD I did not cut mine back either, I waited to see where the dead wood is first and after final leafing out trimmed back so I think you did the right thing....unlike my other hydrangea's there was very little dead wood on the oak leaf..

Stono- mine is an area that gets part sun...will let ya'll know how it blooms as I planted it last fall and the blooms that were on it were from the nursery if you know what I mean...

Little Bow Pink Japanese Iris was blooming this week...the Versicolor are in full bloom too, however, the other JI have not bloom shoots and I'm a bit confizzled on that :)

Beautiful Japanese Iris, red. I love this time of year when temps are still comfortable, so we can get out and enjoy the 'flowers' of our labor.

That is truly good news, BSD! Mine is planted under a Live Oak. Gangly as all hell (not sure if that expression is permissable on Dave's Garden), but you get what I mean... IT'S UGLY! OK for now, while it gets a good root system growing, but I plan to prune it severly this winter if the growth holds. Really like this plant!

NOID Hydrangea - if anyone recognizes this I'd love to put a name to it.

Morning Glory Platycodon Blue X Fujishibori. The flowers are from two different plants that are side by side .. the F1 flower on the left is close to the Platycodon Blue form and the F1 flower on the right more toward the Fujishibori form.

That is a such an exotic looking Clematis. Love it!

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

It is .. This is the only clematis I've ever grown. When I first got this plant I didn't know that Clematis liked cool feet. Thought I killed it a number of times because it would start growing, die back and disappear for a few months and grow back again. My mistake was having it on the potting bench in the greenhouse in full sun. I stuck the pot under the bench after it's latest disappearing act and forgot about it until I started cleaning out the greenhouse. It had grown more than I had ever seen it grow and had a bud! I did a little research and discovered the cool roots thing and moved it out to the Woodland Corner. I'm still debating whether or not to plant it in the ground.

Good to know, Mme X. I recently saw another cultivar - Duchess of Edinburg - that has pretty carnation like flowers. I wish I had bought it, but I can't remember where I saw it. Maybe I'm visiting too many garden centers...

Seabrook, SC(Zone 8b)

Here's a row of oak leaf hydrangeas I'm slowly establishing. They're in full sun and they've struggled. It doesn't help that I never water them. Poor babies. I think they'd definitely like part shade.

The hydrangea I have that loves sun is hydrangea paniculata 'Tardiva.' It also blooms late summer/fall and the blooms stick around for a long time. I'll post a picture in a couple months, I have a hedge started on those, too. They've been planted half the time of the oakleafs and they're already 6' tall.

Spigelia marilandica, one of our woodland natives. Was significantly more floriferous before my 5 yo cousin picked a bunch of flowers for Easter! Oh well, c'est la vie. I love this plant more each year.

The garden bed that looks about the best at the moment. Joe Pye Weed and Golden Rod will show up soon, and then you won't be able to see the compost tumbler. Probably should have taken this picture before I decided to edge the bed.

I love that Spigelia marilandica .. if you get some seeds, I'd love to have some to add it to my little Woodlands Corner.

this is my first year with lilies. I have a Vermeer that is loaded with buds .. they are still small so it will probably be awhile til it blooms. Do you know the name of that first one you posted?

That is one gorgeous bed, B&J!

This is a Shidare Morning Glory .. Shidare means weeping in Japanese .. this particular morning glory has lost the ability to climb and twine. It trails.

Hippeaskelia hybrid

Last year, on the day after Easter, Publix sold off their lilies for $1. I bought several to use in propagation classes and planted a couple. It was a good investment!

Erythrina bidwillii.

This is not the prettiest shrub/tree, it is downright ugly mostof the time, but the flowers are so showy.

Great buy on those lilies Ardesia!! loving the Hippeaskelia

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I bought the hippeaskelia years ago from Gretchen and Chris at Buried Treasures and they did not know anything about the bulbs, they had no hardiness information at all. Thankfully they have turned out to be quite hardy and easy to grow. They have not multiplied but I still have them in a pot, maybe if I put them in the ground they will take off.

Seabrook, SC(Zone 8b)

Alice, you're Erythrina bidwillii looks great! Mine is nowhere near ready to bloom. Weird.

I always plant red pentas for the butterflies, they adore them. This year however, the sphinx moth caterpillars have almost destroyed them. Some have no leaves left. However, I love sphinx moths so I'm just going to hope they rebound... and plant more zinnia seeds just in case.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I bought 6 large, healthy pentas this year. They are all planted in the same bed get the same water, etc. and 4 of them have died. The remaining two look great, tis a puzzlement.

These sedum are just beginning to show color. The sedum autumn joy are still green. Otherwise, they are identical except for size. The sedum are larger.
