Hi there,
I do a lot of backpacking and hiking in the Pacific Northwest. I have been curious about a fly that looks similar to a bee but with no stinger or apparent bite (at least I haven't been bitten). They gently land on your skin and stick out a black tongue which appears to have a flat disc on at the base and seem to enjoy tasting sweat. I wanted to find out if anyone might know what kind of insect they are. I don't have a picture as they move when I try to take one. Much thanks.
