I have not posted in a long time, but thought I'd share what disaster has happened at our nursery. I think the weather has affected everyone from time to time, and last Saturday was our turn as our entire nursery with greenhouses was almost obliterated by a flash flood.
We operate a perennial plant nursery with 2 greenhouses . A nearby stream overflowed it's banks last Saturday and put us under about 3' of water.
Most of our plants were in 1 gallon containers and plug trays and were swept up to a quarter mile away. We have been searching all week for lost plants and pots. They are scattered across fields and buried under debris.
The trays that were not swept away and emptied are instead filled with up to 1/2" of sticky silt, sand, and mud. All of our plants have to be washed and repotted.
Our insurance company is not covering any of the loss so I'm posting to see if anyone here has had such a thing happen to them and what they did about it.
Our Nursery Was Wiped Out
I have no help but am so sorry about that disaster for your business, especially in a prime selling period.
I'm sorry for the disaster that has happened and I hope you are able to recover quickly. Floods are so distructive!
so what is insurance for then? i am sorry this has happened.
Flood insurance is not covered in most policies.
jujube is right. generally have to get a separate policy for floods. probably not a practical statement, but if there is anything i can do from here - even if it's researching policies for you-let me know.
Debra
A flood hit my orchard last year and scared the hell out of me. I ended up OK just barely.
Sorry that you were not as fortunate.
How are things now?
We have rebuilt and replanted and are now back in business.
Yea!! [happy applause] :-)
One of your regular customers came to our swap and told us how nice your plants are and what a good nursery you've been. Wishing you a good rest of the year.
