2011 NORTH CENTRAL TX RU **MAY 1ST** (FOOD THREAD)

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Unless I have enough in the freezer, I'm retracting my beans. I do have something else in mind to cook up.

Other things prevented me from making my usual gallons of beans recipe yesterday.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Please don't worry, there will be plenty for everyone.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Smockette is bringing some beans, should be set on that Chuck, :-)

I'm coming by myself with... Trades, 6 lbs. Roast BBQ, and 6 door prizes...

I agree with Sheila, the worst should be over by noon.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

No, Smockette is bring onion for Chuck's beans LOL!
We can sit eat, and exchange gifts if it is raining too much and wait to trade. LOL!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Oooops, where were my glasses when i misread smockettes post. Next time I will bring the beans, ok yall?
Smockette tell Doris i used her onions in my stew last night, they were yummmmy!

Carrollton, TX(Zone 8a)

My, my goodness. After eating all of that food you probably should have had Richard Simmons there to lead you in some dancing exercises. Maybe next year I will receive an invitation.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Please be aware that you don't need an invitation to come to an RU, all Dave's members are welcome, whether they live in this area or not.
So please remember that this fall and come join us.
Josephine.

Carrollton, TX(Zone 8a)

Before I can decide whether or not to come, definition of a "RU" please.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL!! Round Up (free plant swap in TX). We bring pot luck dishes to share. Pre-trade some plants and bring others we want to share with or without a trade. Then we also have a door prize drawing for small gifts we each bring. Get and give lots of hugs and smiles too!!
Wish you had asked before this weekend and been able to join us. We had 32 members and guest this time, but usally a few more when weather is good.
Sheila

Carrollton, TX(Zone 8a)

What date this fall? I'll put it on my calendar cause I always enjoy a good RU (round up), especially when there's food! I'll even check to see if Richard Simmons is available.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

The fall date has not been set yet, but we will announce it with plenty of time, we have to get over this one, before we can start thinking about another.

Carrollton, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, it was one of "those" kinds of RU's that takes a few days to recover from? Even better!

Grandview, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL :)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, it takes a few days to recover because we work so hard, not for any other reason.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Well takes a while to get all the plants you bring home it the ground too!!

BTW, there is a list of events around Texas at the top of this forum. (just click the Texas Gardening forum at the bottom of this page). Whenever something is going on we will post it there. Ours isn't the only one; you might check out the RUs and other events listed there.

Cleburne, TX(Zone 8a)

And planting here is going to take a while. It is too wet (hurrah!!) to plant. Our rain gauge said 3 inches Monday evening. And now 45º or so. I just keep talking to all these new plants and telling them they really haven't been transported to North Dakota!! This really has been a year for the record books weather-wise.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Glenna, how are your ruellias doing? If they get wilty, just give them some water. They pout for about 2 weeks, but then they'll be happy little campers once they get established.

Cleburne, TX(Zone 8a)

Stephanie, they are seriously pouting. I'm used to that because I have the Katie Blue ruellia and it does the same when transplanted and I think it likes being in a pot even less! I watered them and put them in the shade. Hoping I can plant a few things today but the ground just doesn't want to dry out with the temp this low. The ground is so soaked that we still have water standing in a few places. But I am NOT complaining. We needed it badly. Our stock pond would have been dry pretty soon if we hadn't gotten this rain.

Thanks.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Good! I didn't get a chance to tell you about them pouting at the RU. Since these are bigger than I normally trade (I was thinning out a bed), they are especially pouty. They've got some really long roots (6"-8" or longer) so they're not liking being uprooted and relocated. They'll be fine, though.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

And, if i may add,... Clipping off some of the foliage helps take the strain off also.

O/~ waves to hrp50. Glad you chimed in, and i see ya brung some jokes. ROFL! Keep your fingers on the pulse of this forum, and you won't miss anything. We get a lot of excercise planting all of our new trades. A lot of stupping and schleping goes on between roundups.. :-/

Y'all, i have half of the plantings done, and got wind of Candletrees at Archie's. Bought some right away... Just enough, just in time.

Will make a thread and stop only threatening to post one. Haha!

Carrollton, TX(Zone 8a)

Do I understand correctly that's there's work to do after a RU, like planting stuff? I thought that we just got together to eat. What if we don't have any plants to bring? All I would have had is some early blight infested tomato plants. Could I just bring an extra dish instead?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

There are always extra plants we bring to share with anyone who wants them. Usually very special ones you cant buy at a local nursery are also given away. My first swap I didn't have much at all when i came, and left with some of what are now my favorites. And friends to match who I couldn't trade for anything.

What's your favorite plant?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

If you don't have anything to trade, just show up and you'll go home with lots and lots of plants! Non-plant things to trade include manure, yard art, coffee grounds, seeds, 1 gal milk jugs (for winter sowers), and pots (for seedlings and such).

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Man, that reminds me I had a bunch of milk jugs I meant to bring....but then I would have had room for them! LOL!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Hrp50....here is a feeler for a RU in Burleson that is just beginning to form.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Are you going to the BurlelesonRU Sheila?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, I may not have time to take much but it's not about the plants with me.

Plus it is just south of Fort Worth, easy drive.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I know! Pretty close huh? I would love to make that one, maybe go to you and ride along. Just thinking.

:-S

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

You can do that....may have a guest with me too. If we can't get in one car, we can still caravan there.

Carrollton, TX(Zone 8a)

Sheila_FW

Thank you for my invitation to the June 5th Burleson RU, but I checked my calendar and I will be busy rotating the wheels on my Lawnboy that day. But I might be able to make a RU in the fall, unless it's on the day that I will be back-washing my Waterpik. (I really hope you guys have a sense of humor)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

hrp50....I do have a sense of humor... Funny! We just have different priorities! LOL!

Debnes....I don't know how I forgot my company from Georgia will be here and I am bringing her. Herman and follow us down if you want to ride with me, no problem.

Just realized this is on the OLD RU thread....Debnes you have my number if you need to talk.
