Spring 2011 Blooms From South Florida

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

It's was the driest winter in 80 years down here, with excessive sunshine and its continued into late April. Just meant there was were waterings this winter. Here are some photos from March up through this morning. This is Hibiscus "Burnt Saffron" blooming this morning.

They are all stunning, Jon. Witches Dance is really different. Tell me what you know about it. Braveheart is really showing off for you. Like your new seedling. Bet Dee will come up with a name for it. Thanks for sharing with us. Mine are still recovering from an ice storm so I'm not sure when I'll have any blooms to share. Thanks for sharing your beauties with us.

Hugs,
Judy

Hi Judy

Hopefully your hibiscus will recover pretty quickly. We're heading into the time of the year when they go into their fast growth so that should be a help. Those were the first blooms I had seen on "Witches Dance" and immediate;y liked it for its uniqueness. I have never had anything similar to it before. I know it was hybridized by Carlos & Nola Reynolds in FL and mine came from Tried & True Hibiscus. It was just registered as a new hibiscus in October 2010, so it has to be something fairly new.

This one is "Jolanda Gommer" opening this morning. It's typically very bright when first opening and then fades to more subtle colorful tones later in the day.

Jon, that is fantastic!!!! Anyone would be proud to own this one. What size is it? Jon, how many do you have now? Just wondered if you were sticking to your 40 plants limit? Don't think I can resist the urge. Got an order in for Tried & True....from their summer selection. Was sick when they did their spring offering & they were sold out before I could get in on that one. Was at the garden centers this last couple of weeks but have not found anything except the same GV they've been selling for years. Have to slap my hands & resist the urge to just buy a Hibiscus of any kind just to see a bloom. Found some really nice Hydrangeas at Wally World for $12.00. The ever blooming ones. Have bought a lot of other plants to satisfy my urge to see COLOR. So far that is working. Thanks for sharing this beauty with us.

Hugs,
Judy

Jolanda Gommer was hybridized in The Netherlands. It has an average sized 6-7 inch bloom. I've slimmed the collection down to 33 hibiscus Judy. Found quite a few new homes over the winter. Haven't bought any new ones since last fall. The couple times I did go to look the companies were sold out/not shipping at that time. Wish hydrangeas would grow here, but I don't know of any that do because we lack a winter dormancy period. Also buy other types of plants for color just as you do. Things beginning to bloom down here right now are Daylilies, Rudbeckia, Echinacea, Amaryllis.

Hey Jon

Nice blooms; really like Witches Dance; is that a new one? I'm still waiting to see if any of mine are going to come back after our cold winter spell. If they do then I will put them in pots so that next winter I can bring them in the house and not have to wait so long for them to come back and bloom. I should be enjoying blooms; instead, I'm waiting to see green.

I did get my first blooms on the day lilies I ordered from Lady Bug Day Lilies.

Hi Patty

Yes, "Witches Dance" is a new one I added last fall. After the last two freakish winters I can see why you would want to pot them and bring them inside.

Wow, that was fast for your new Daylilies to see blooms. All of mine now have scapes and 4 different varieties have put out blooms so far.

Jon! Beautiful display!! I cant pick a favorite... Funny Voodoo always makes me smile though... Curt's gift I have been eye-ballin too! I cant believe you are down to 33! Are you making room for something new and fresh? Something new offered this summer perhaps?

I agree with Witches dance, real cool! And the name somehow fits it perfectly!

Dee has been laying low. I spoke with her a few months ago. She apologized for leaving all of us wondering about her, but she is putting a lot of time into taking care of her ill parents. She sent her love and smiles to all of you. I should have told all of you sooner, but DG has been pretty dead lately. LETS SPARK IT UP!

Patty, you can always try spraying a couple times a day with some Super Nova solution. I would dilute it at a higher rate then suggested and spray everything, the leaves and branches. That may stimulate any new growth a bit faster. Good luck.

Judy, I have been twiddling my thumbs at the hydrangeas too! I have a perfect spot for them. It is a huge area with dappled sun that I want to fill with all different colors!

Thanks for all the beautiful photos Jon!

Thanks Kristen. It's pretty typical for me to lower the number of plants at some point each year. Also decided to move on with a few of the older plants also this past winter. Some I've had for 3 or 4 years and want some additional space for something new or different. Have used some of the space for growing different things in pots. Have added some new Canna Lilies, Vietnamese Hollyhocks, Foxglove, Dahlias and larger specialty/florist type Mum plants into the freed up space that was created. This is a picture this morning of Canna Lily "Belinda". I purchased her as a tuber in February and she now fills in a spot where a potted hibiscus used to be.

Here's a Hibiscus "Jolanda Gommer" bloom late afternoon. When you compare it to the "Jolanda Gommer" photo a few posts back you can see the bloom color difference from morning to afternoon.

Thanks, Kristen, for keeping us posted on Dee. Knew something had to be going on for her not to be posting her beautiful blooms.

Jon, love your Canna. Think my tropicals are the only ones to come back this year. Some kind of worm gets into mine...leaf roller or something. I like other things too....way toooo many other things. But my main loves are Hibiscus, Ferns & Brugs. The hail we had the other evening sure put a lot of holes in the Brugs, plus 4 in the GH roof. As Scarlett says, "Tomorrow is another day." And, the way the weather is doing another day for more storms. Lots of people have it a lot worse (no roof on their home) so I won't complain.

Hugs,
Judy

What is Super Nova solution?? I am not familiar with it.

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

Sorry to hear about the hail damage. Believe it or not we had a bad hailstorm June 2009 and it did significant damage to the hibiscus foliage. Very strange to see hail accumulating on the ground and looking like snow on an early summer day in Ft Lauderdale.

Oh yes Judy, you are referring to the dreaded Canna Leaf Roller. I removed all my Cannas in 2009. They had to be sprayed every 10-14 days during approx May-Oct to keep them from folding over the edges of the foliage and chewing away underneath. If untreated they can do some serious foliage damage in less than a week. Decided to try a couple new Cannas this year. Keeping them potted and inside the pool screening should eliminate the potential leaf roller issue.

Patty, Super Nova is a growth enhancer. Here is a link that will tell you all about it http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/acatalog/growthenhancer.htm

You will love it.

Jon, your Canna looks so fun! I can only handle one tropical species at a time in tricky CT! I have a Day Avacado which I am killing and a Desert Rose which has no leaves.... >:-( I am doing well with the hibiscus though, so that is all the matters, Ill take it!
