Spider id?
I don't know anything about australian spiders, but I know its an orbweaver of some type.
Google image search this:
Eriophora transmarina
It's the best I could come up with, and some of the results match. Whether there is variation in the species, or its a case of misidentification on someone's part I don't know. =)
Garden Orbweaver Spider.
... This spider was sitting on a house wall hidden under a panel and no web in sight...
I think this is Araneus fuliginatus: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/4979/
It is indeed an orb-weaver. Some of the orb-weavers build their webs at dusk and then dismantle them at dawn, so you only find their webs in the dark,
