Can you see who has come to visit?

When we start to get a carpenter bee hole, we fill it in with wood filler. They don't like the taste and stop drilling.

Ardesia I just looked on the Net and a bunch of sites speak to painting the wood after using wood putty to prevent further drilling. Ask the builder.com, How to get rid of pests.com. The sites also say that the bees if putty'd in won't drill back out.

I'll try the wood putty idea. I am just thankful they have not invaded my siding, the potting bench is easily repaired or replaced.

They seem to like our swim spa. Last year they drilled over 40 nice little round holes. I can live with 1 or 2 but 40+. Haven't noticed them yet this year but I know they are lurking somewhere. We also have a whole colony of tree frogs take up residence in the spa. My grandkids love to catch them.

I don't particularly care what the "experts" say about snake behavior: I base my response on "personal experience". Many years ago when I lived in Southbury, Conn. (at the foot of "Rattlesnake Hill"), I had rolled the winter cover of my pool off, and just "left it there" beside the pool, fully intending to fold it up and put it away the next week. As happens, I didn't "fold it up and put it away" the next week, or the weeks thereafter. When my dad revisited a few weeks later, he noted the pool cover still laying there, and said "let's put this thing away". Agreed it was past time, so he took one end, and I took the other, to fold it up. But a couple of Copperheads were "gettin' it on" down on his end, and they didn't apprecreciate being disturbed, and they came out swinging! Lordy, what a sight! My poor dad running like hell away from a truly incensed Copperhead who was really ticked, and moving quick. I got a shovel from the shed and dispatched him summarily. Then the Mrs. came out of the folds and started chasing him. Had to put an end to her, too. I like snakes in general. No like poisonous snakes, though...

I can just picture it, Stono!

There seem to be more and more snakes each year and I think I have seen more snakes this year that I have seen in all the years we have lived here. They seem to be everywhere but so far I have not observed any venomous ones. The other day I was walking near the house and a large black snake tried to get away from me by heading through the lattice under the house. We have hardware cloth inside the lattice and when he realized he could not get away that way he turned around and came my direction to scare me away. It worked, I ran like - well you know what I ran like.

Stono, I will think about your copperheads every time I pick something up now. The herpetologists used to catch snakes over in Hampton County by laying sheets of plywood or sheet metal on the ground in the woods. The snakes gravitated ti those dark spots and were easy prey for the scientists.

We had tons of copperheads in Texas- they would get in our pool then get caught in the skimmer. On occasion we would even find them in the kitchen- they seemed to like our mexican tile floor- after finding the first one we never walked into the kitchen in the dark. Never could figure how they got in.

I have copperheads AND water water moccasins .. those guys tend to give me a wide berth .. they are intimately acquainted with my broom. First time I see a venomous snake I start carrying my broom when I go into the back yard .. I just wish I could get those darn squirrels to sit still long enough for me to whack em.

Great to meat you Cornish! Looks like I'll be heading your way in a few weeks .. I'll let you know.

We have a bunch of poisonous snakes, fortunately don't see them too often. However, hardly a day goes by I don't run into rat snakes. These two were snuggled up together in our pump house. Ick!

Ick is right, when we had a pump house I wouldhave done without water before going in there, I just knew it was full of creepy crawlies.

Jen, you really need to post a picture of Agnes, I'll bet no one else on the forum has one of those in their yard.
