Eggs as barter:)

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

What's the oddest or most useful thing you've traded eggs for? I had two dozen in my car, trying to find someone who wanted them (my friends have their own chickens). I stopped at a yard sale, and found a can full of big hinges, nice big brass ones. I have a new coop to build, and hinges like this (at about $12.00 for a pair) were not in my miniscule budget. I was just chatting, and somehow I mentioned that I had homeless eggs in the car.
They got the eggs, I got the hinges......

Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy :)

Great trade for you, lol

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

SCORE! LOL That is too cool. There should be more of that!! Great idea!

Ferndale, WA

Catmad that is wonderful, brass hinges are a goldmine. Even silver plated hinges are terribly expensive. I'm so happy for you...Hay

I make chicken saddles n diapers. I traded those for hatching eggs one time..lol...

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

I think I'll take a coupla dozen when I go anywhere. The family who we get hay from had asked if we could spare some eggs, and I was glad to help. Friday Joe came back with the hay, and a HUGE pound cake, so big it was baked in a tube pan. It was still warm :). It is without a doubt the _best_ pound cake I've ever tasted, and made with my little eggs. I was going to ask for the recipe, but I'm not much of a baker. I'd probably be very disappointed in my result *G*.
I'll just keep sending eggs:)
Thinking about it, my eggs have paid for themselves in ways I'd never considered.

Thank you chickens:)

Several of my friends have rewarded me with baked goods in exchange for the eggs I give them. I gave one lady lemons and eggs and got lemon meringue pie in return. I feel I am on the winning side.

I love it! That is the way things SHOULD be! I love it!!! This is so nice to hear in times like we are having. I miss times when everyone shared.. and brought things to their neighbor just cause... I only have one neighbor now that still brings me stuff.. I cook for him sometimes.. it's just so nice.

Ferndale, WA

It is nice and I agree, there should be more of it. Karen has made pies and zucchini bread for all the neighbors, especially during the Christmas Holidays...None of them have ever brought anything over...:o( What up with that...LOL...Thats not why she does it though and I am very proud of her for her kindness...She is my Princess...Hay

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

An elderly man down the street brings me Asparagus, pears, peaches & grapes every year! I've canned the peaches & pears and given them back to him.. He loves them! I gobble every single piece of asparagus though.. LOL no way I'm givin that up! I made some grape jam and gave him ONE tiny jar.. I'm terrible..
He is a great critic.. I made him some Okra and tomatoes and he said that was a waste of some good okra!
I brought him some eggs and he thought the blue ones were rotten... LOL

What kind of chicken lays blue eggs? I thought only Robins did that?

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Ha Ha!!! steadycam3.... welcome to the Chicken Forum.....You really neeeeeed us!!! Asking that question means yu are really interested and want to learn more.. you are fixing to become a Chicken head for sure!! WELCOME!
Oh by the way....Blue eggs come from Americaunas .....actually they are a little blue green! Now Ive never seen an Araucana egg but I believe they are also blue....am I right Y'all????

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

*G*. Same question I get:). I always explain the the odd colored eggs are fine, just from a different kind of chicken. The lady Sunday asked me if they were from Guineas...

I have Ameracaunas which lay everything from blue to sage green, and mixes that do the same. Aracaunas are supposed to lay very blue eggs, but I can't vouch for that. Wish I could...

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Here is a group of Ameraucana eggs (amongst others) I had in my bator a while back.

PS.. Like the lady on BYC has in her profile.. There is no -i- in Ameraucana. :)
Yes, Aracauna do lay blue eggs too.

I love to barter. So much nicer to make a good trade than to have to purchase

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Just reading about the trading or bartering makes me feel good. I know actually doing it must feel great! Yeah, Im trying to figure a way to get me some chickens. Not ready yet but I may lurk about here to learn stuff. Thanks to you all. Cam

Richmond, TX

Lurkers are always welcome.

ZZ, you have colored Easter eggs without dying a thing! Beautiful eggs. There was a recent expose' on our local news about an egg factory near here. It was so horrible, I could not look at most of it. The Humane Society made the video. It really made me think twice about not growing my own chickens and eggs. It's that thought that is parked there on the back burner but I know it wont go away. I wont stop until that thot produces eggs from happy chickens. My chickens. Cam

(Zone 6b)

Cam you are in the right place. Great people here that are always pleasant, and always eager to help. Well, almost always. 99% is pretty good odds you will have a nice experience here.

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks, LFJ. I love being on DG. Never had a bad experience. I think Gardners/Farmers are just bred to be nice, help out, share knowledge and be supportive. I grew up with Dominick, Rhode Island Reds and some white ones but Im really curious about those cute little chickens with the pantaloons and top knots. Cam

(Zone 6b)

Are you talking silkies? That's what I have.

2 years ago for Easter I stored some eggs for three weeks, They were green, blue and some pink. I hard boiled them the night before, gave Billy some markers and he decorated them. That is what he hunted that year..
No Mess... No Fuss

(Zone 6b)

When will Z send me some blue hatching eggs? Cry cry cry. Do araucanas and silkies get along?

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

LFJ, I dont know nothin' about anything but old fashioned farm chickens. Im here trying to learn. Is that the name of the cute chickens? Silkies? I guess I need to do some Google work, dont I. Cam

(Zone 6b)

Oh oh oh. Let me show you mine I put in a show last fall. :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwpZh5yL4hQ

I bought this pair last spring, and do you know she still has not laid an egg? Still waiting, and waiting. Surely she will produce soon. The other night when I was there she was sitting on the bottom of the cage. Usually she is standing on a piece of wood I put in there. So, maybe there is hope

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Well, steadycam.. surely you know how good a home grown fresh egg is right? Well, add some flax seed to the mix, and let them free range, and you've got high dollar Omega 3 eggs too boot..

I told my neighbor to do a taste test of one of my hen's eggs boiled against any store bought.. He went on and on about how much better mine was.

So it's not only the taste, it's the health benefit.. and the satisfaction of having pets. :)

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

LFJ, Those are the cutest chickens I have ever seen in my life. Do they give edible eggs or are they just for show?

(Zone 6b)

Silkies lay small beige colored eggs, very edible and healthy. At least the others are laying, but not my white one yet.

You do not want to know what I paid for that pair though. It was kind of stupid of me, but I wanted them so badly. When you want something bad enough you can sacrifice something else. Not sure I will do it again, esp if she won't lay an egg and give me some babies!

I need so many other things, but there I was buying high dollar show chickens. Get real? :D Oh well we only live once. I WANTED THEM!!!! :D

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

We all have things we sacrifice for. I just posted on frugal living that I eat Ramen noodles to have money to buy my cat special food and his Thyroid medicine. I think it's good to be able to give up some things to have something else. Good practice, I think. I really like those little chickens! Cam

(Zone 6b)

Except steadycam there is no nutrition on those noodles. :( Eat an organic carrot and at least get something. Take care of yourself too, it's a must. Sorry, but I had to say it. I almost died from a bad diet. When I cleaned up my act I got considerably better.

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

I did not give you the whole quote on the thread. I am trained in nutrition and I make sure I get all the necessary nutrients by eating protein bars and fruit and veggies from my garden. I also eat a LOT of beans. I am aware that the Ramen is useless. It's hot and makes me feel like Ive eaten. Ive read college students sometimes get scurvy by eating ONLY Ramen noodles and nothing else. You are sweet to have concern for me. I appreciate your thoughtfulness.
