I heard and of all the years I lived in Ben Wheeler the worst we got was the tail of a hurricane and a drought that lasted for two years. I do miss the sugar sand though. :(

**EAST TEXAS 2011 RU MAY 15TH** (TRADE LIST)
Perkoschilefarm,
You're the first person I've ever know who LIKED the sugar sand. I had wonderful sandy loam with a hint of clay (didn't like that part) when I lived south of Tyler so this is a whole new experience for me. We have terrible ants which doesn't help and bullnettle!!! I'll learn but it's a huge learning curve for me. LOL Where did you live in Ben Wheeler?? We just love it!!!
This is a picture I took off my back porch of TWO HUGE torandos just before they started rotation and passed over my home. We are blessed and fortunate that it wasn't worse. There was quite a lot of damage in my area and a home totally lost but no lives lost. It was amazing after how everyone came out and helped each other, ran door to door in the pouring rain to check on stranger and neighbors.
Do you have hints for the sand??
I have many native plants that I haven't ID'd yet and will bring a few. My milkweed died when I tried potting it up so I will try to dig up some babies and hopefully they will do better.
Here's my updated GIVING list:
Trishann - hosta, daylily, blue cloud salva
Blkraven - milkweed (hopefully) 2 hosta and Englemans sage
James - mimosa powderpuff
Perkoschilefarm - peaves, sassafras and oak sappling
Cajun - datura seedlings, sassafras and milkweed (hopefully)
Perkoschile - I'd be interested in any of the following from you: holly bush, black pearl pepper, watermelon (would be so happy in the sand LOL), calendula, lemon grass and especially Yellow Ageratum.
James - I'd like any of the following from you: blue mist flower, phlox, obedient plant, would LOVE giant coneflower, agastache, wild indigo, penstemon and especially black eyed susan.
Please look through my list and see what you else you want.
My sedum is lovely. I believe I have Autumn Fire and a Japanese sedum.
Mindy
Oh I lived off of 773 specifically VZCR 4708. I used the sand to make my own all around soil mixes for anything and everything. Though using nematodes for grubs and ants nothing ever struggled to grow but the gophers were annoying to say the least.
I'll bring you everything you listed. Do you still have a pot of Mimosa powderpuff? We had this growing on our land too but I never knew what it was until now. I'll show you the pic. I took of it back in 2006.

We have so much sand where we are that it sometimes feels like we live in the desert. You just gotta amend like crazy to find a happy medium for growing. Also helps to grow more Texas natives.
We would mix in some compost and till it all together then just plant tomatoes, squash, green beans, chile's, corn and lots more directly in. We never had problems except for the coons and coyotes feasts on our produce from time to time.
blkraven2

i bought a mini blind from the thrift store today to mark the plants i'm bringing.

Phyllis, I will bring you the cement borders. May I try a brugs? I've never grown them--are they hard?
Ooh, but wait... I LOVE Banana Trees and would love at least one ;-)
What's the Desert Trumpet Vine? I don't know that one....
The Purple Heart is a Tradescantia. It will die back, but come back the next year and will have multiplied. I love it, but then I love just about anything purple LOL (mine's not the best picture; it's much prettier "in person")

Brugs and banana trees no problem Carole you can have some of both
the brugs are not hard to grow they like to get water and fed ...I have to look for it but there is a thread on here someplace that talks about the recipe that Ken uses on his plants and it does wonders for all plants and the brugs like it too.
oh duh the purple heart I call it something else but the name just left my tongue ...oh wait wandering jew is what my grandma always called it
the dessert trumpet vine looks like this and I am thinking this is what she has by the leaves I can see in the pictures so I am going ot dig a few of them up too to bring home LOL
