Found in Birmingham, UK. Similar size to a bumblebee.
Possibly a tongue?

This is in fact, a bee - it simply has its 'tongue' extended forwards. There are some very dark bees in Britain, see http://tinyurl.com/3ab8rcc for an example.
Thanks! I was a little bemused when I saw it, as I've never seen a bee's "tongue" before.
