I don't know if this is friend or foe pretty big in size maybe 3.5-4 inches big around as a finger. It has little gold dots on the side

This is a caterpillar of one of the giant silk moths in the family Saturniidae; possibly a polyphemus moth (Antheraea polyphemus) - see http://tinyurl.com/3ez7svt for an image. These seldom become abundant enough to cause any real damage.
