This is an ootheca (egg case) of a praying mantis; beneficial and nothing to worry about.
WOW! I would love to be able to see the Mantis and to take a picture :-)
Never saw one in real!

Australia has many native species of mantids - see http://tinyurl.com/42fm3rj for one of the commonest species, the so-called 'garden mantid.'
Dee - when I was 7 or 8 years old I brought a similar mantis egg case home and kept it in my room. One Sunday morning as we were getting ready to leave for church we discovered the eggs had hatched. Hundreds of miniature (3/8") preying mantises all over my room. What timing. :-)
