Also known as blackberry lilies. I never know what to do with these things. I have always given them away, but I thought this year (if they are easy) I would try to plant some and give the rest away. So what do I do with these? If you can tell me where I can find another thread about this I'll go read that.
Thanks
how to plant candy lily seeds
I grew some many years ago. I think I just put them in some potting soil and kept them damp. They grew and flowered so they couldn't have been to fussy.

Ok, thanks Katie. I'll try it.
These seeds are fairly easily propagated, nothing different than sowing and watering. We did some for class this year and only had about a 40% germination rate from them but last years was more like 90%, so if it doesn't work one time, don't give up! good luck!
Thanks Gardening.:) Did you sow them in the ground or in pots? I'm wondering how well they transplant as babies.
I just read at Swallowtailgardenseeds.com that these seeds germinate better in the dark.

Thanks Katie. That's interesting. I'm going to look at their website.
They were in a pot out in the greenhouse under shade cloth, then each student got to transplant - since we pretty much all had some survive they must not mind transplanting - even by the beginner gardener as some had never done any seed transplanting before.
Thanks for the info. I think I'll just try one or two pots of seeds then and give the rest away.
SF, save me some, please.
In the last yr or so, I have kinda lost track of what I've always had. Hadn't even thought about not having some on my front porch!!!
I'll save you some PI lily seeds to swap, if you like. Or some rainlily seeds?
You have seen that Rachel is thinking of a having a RU this fall, right? And I know you have been in touch w/Sandy. Maybe we can get together then!!! Seems like forever since I've seen ya'll!!!
:~)
You're right Smockette, it has been forever! How are you? Last I heard you had a broken collar bone. BTW what are Pl lilies? No thanks on the rainlily seeds. I already have some of those that never get a chance to bloom.lol
And who is Rachel? I know there are some DGer's in my area, but I don't know who they are. I've been thinking it would be fun to have a meet and greet session, but it hasn't happened yet. I haven't really been in contact with anybody much except Mamajack on the other site. I really miss those RU's.
Ck the Texas forum. I just bumped Rachel's thread up to the top for you.
PI lilies are Philippine lilies that are white & grow anywhere fr 2-6' tall & have a bloom similar to an Easter lily.
Ike spread 3 pods of seeds all over my yard. At first I thought they were a new weed he had brought me until I realized what they were. I've been digging them up everywhere I see them now, to keep the mower fr getting them!
:~)
I have successfully winter sowed blackberry lily seeds and they transplant very well. I have found that they (the leaves) do better if they get some shade from other tall plants in front of them. Otherwise they scortch and die.
Stephanie, do you have any seeds or plants that may make seeds by the fall RU?
:~)
I have LOTS of seeds left from last year. I have seed pods on some of my plants already this year. They're the orange flowered ones.
Yep, that's them. I've had them on my front porch for yrs!
While my Dad was sick, I didn't do much to my poor plants for winter except cram them in the GHs. & my cat sitter, staying @ my house while I was up there, didn't clear my deck or front porch. I always put everything I can, in the GHs but now I know what that pot on the front porch(faces E) that has nothing in it now, was!!!
I'll bring some seeds to you at the fall RU. Last year, I dug some plants up and gave those to someone. Maybe mine will multiply by the fall and I can bring you some fans, too.
You're just such a sweetie!!!!
:~)
I bought Belamcanda chinensis seeds from Seed Savers Exchange some years back. The pack said to chill them first (moist seed starting mix for 7 days?) then remove to bottom heat - which I did. They sprouted and grew to transplant size but I lost them over time.
This year I bought more seeds, planted as before, not a one of them sprouted; the seed must have been too old, no signs of life at all.
I will try again! The first time I saw these was at Monticello in the front garden next to the house - they stood out with their bright speckled orange blooms and blackberry like seed pods!
Ms. Tommie
Try the winter sowing method. It really works well.
Try cutting back the green grass like branches of the rain lilies. Every time I do that, they instantly start blooming. I did it the first time because they were lying on the ground. I trimmed them back to make them more upright. And then they started blooming like crazy. So now I do it every year.
Photo was taken last week. Moved about 5 bulbs and one year later there must be 30.
