pollyk,

I see in an earlier post that you got Little bas. Do you like it? Is it doing well for you? I've been wanting to order that clematis from Brushwood for a while. Got any pics?

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

It's doing well so far. No blooms yet, but it's growing.

Thanks for the info. I enjoy this forum. Have always loved clematis. Just got back to putting in new plants (and Dave's garden) after a 6yr. absence due to illness. Have ordered 2 clematis from Joy Creek (Alionushka and Durandii). They will be here tomorrow. I also ordered 6 more from Dan at Brushwood (Inspiration, Luther Burbank, Huldine, Sunset, Rutuaal, and Rahvarinne). They will be here at the end of the month.

I have read in this forum that some people put a piece of cement in with their clematis when planting...for the lime to leach out. I live in high desert country (northern NV) and our soil is very alkailine and just plain awful, lots of clay, poor drainage, etc. Should I put lime into my soil as well? I plan on amending the soil with excellent compost material, worm castings, and bone meal. Any other suggestions? Anyone?

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm not an expert on clems, but I probably wouldn't if the soil is alkaline anyway. I'm sure someone else can give more info on amendments.

Nice selection you have there.

Well, glad to hear you're back after a long illness. Hope you're feeling better.

Polly,

All is right with the world as I am back to my old self. Thanks. Also, thanks for the info about my alkailine soil. I won't be using any lime. Very good to know.

I have Inspiration and I love it. I would also add small irregular rocks like expanded shale to the mix. Apparently, it helps the roots grow in a healthy way.

None of my Brushwood Clems have put out any new growth. They look the same as when I got them in March.

are they in the ground already? I know it takes awhile before I see new growth because the plant is concentrating on establishing the root system. I have seen new growth on my plants from Brushwood that are sitting on my kitchen table - I was surprised to see this.

Been in the ground for about 3 weeks.

they will take awhile before you see new growth. They are working on their roots ^_^

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Dont give up Marie. I recieved Brushwood order mid April and they havnt begun to show new growth or anything.
I believe when the nights are consistant 60's we will see lots of plant activity.
They just dont like cold.

Marie..clematis are known to sit and pout while they are getting adjusted to their new home..once their roots are happy they will begin to grow..this is not unusual at all..just keep them moist and soon you'll have them just start going nuts!!..Clematis of all the plants I grow require patience..something I've acquired for only these gorgeous plants..wished I could "acquire" that when it comes to men..but alas that is life..LOL...Jeanne

I learned another thing about clems this year.
They are sometimes waaaay late returning the following year and some even take a year off.
