I have both and if anybody knows how to propigate them, I can start some in the spring. (my lemon has lemons on it now)

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

can you propigate them from seed???

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

eyes & cc ... earlier this spring, i made an experiment. i dried several myer lemon seeds. i took a 3 liter plastic soda pop - cut it in half. i punch holes on the bottom part. filled it with peanut foam at the bottom [allow excess water to come off]. filled with equal amount of peat, sand, & perlite. planted 3 seeds and covered with more soil mixture. place the top half over the bottom part [almost like a mini green house effect]. place the bottle underneath the kitchen sink. occassionally check if soil is damp. took a while so be patient. check from time to time to see soil is damp, but not soggy wet. i just spray with water, so as not to distubed the seeds. i planted in April, in June they have sprouted. all 3 seeds are now almost a foot high. yes, the seeds can be propagated.

eyes, if u wish, i can share 1 of the seedling for postage. if i am not on a very limited income, i would gladly just send u the plant. hope u understand. one of these days i have to repot them and keep them inside on a southwest facing window for the winter... ma vie

Both Meyers lemons (commonly found in grocery stores) and Key Lime (commonly found in grocery stores) can be grown successfully from seeds and remain true to plant although other citrus seeds to not. I've also grown Pink Grapefruit, Honey Tangerine and Clementines from seeds.

Now any orange I've tried I've not been successful in getting them to sprout, but that doesn't stop me from frying again and again till I get it right. I have to interject that I have Jamaican Ugly fruit citrus that did sprout and now have a 3 month old plant 6 inches tall.

I use fresh seeds and soak them for 3-5 days changing the water daily before I sow them in potting soil. My seeds generally sprout in 14 days.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Thats what I need to know - I'm off to the grocery store!!!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

OK ,I bought the lemon and lime.Got 11 seeds from the lemon. The lime had NONE!!!Are there seedless limes??? I soak them for 3 to 5 days or let them dry?

Edgewater, FL(Zone 9a)

I have always been told that citrus plants had to be grafted. If you grow them from seed you will end up with sour stock.

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

there was a artical in the garden section of the St Pete times about that and it said that you may or may not get fruit. it also said if you get fruit it may be bitter. my neighbor has two orange trees that he started from seed 10 years ago and still no fruit.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

CC ... i won't let the above info throw me off. u got to remember, if a plant is given proper care, it should do good by U!

when i bought the house i left behind, there were 2 orange trees and 1 lemon tree that accdg to the seller, never bear any fruit [the house was 50 yrs. old]. once i acquired the property, i gave the trees all the TLC i could possibly give. 2 years later... the lemon tree gave me lemons as big as grapefruits. the orange trees gave so much oranges, i have to call families & friends to come and help themselves... yet there were still plenty to have around.

as long one has Beliefs, have Faith in God, HE does wonders! and Mother Nature helps in so many ways too.

as far as the one i started from seed, i will give it all the TLC ever there is. am looking forward to 3 yrs. from now for it to produce fruits for me... good wholesome fruits!!!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I'll try it anyhow, maybe I'll luck out! Thanks!!

My Clementines just sprouted and I planted them Christmas day. I have about 20 new plants. The lemons grow really fast as do red grapefruit. You have to use fertilizer for the citrus plants when they are in pots.

I soak the seeds over night to get all of the pulp off. I then plant them right away. I now have a collection of about 40 or so plants-clementines, red grapefruit, lemons and limes and one Jamaican Ugly fruit (citrus as well that is a natural cross between Honey tangerine and grapefruit that grows in Jamaica.

My variegated lemon plant has two lemons on it. How do I tell when they are ripe? I think they turn yellow instead of striped, but I'm not sure. I wanted to take cuttings from my citrus, but every limb is loaded with blooms and buds. They smell so good, I can't bear to cut them off.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Calla,I almost bid on one of them on ebay, watched the bids and lost interest when it went over 40 bucks.I don't know if I can grow one let alone grow one that cost big bucks. Why would the fruit be striped? My grapefruit tree is about 7 years old ,get flowers and fruit(love the smell) but every year when I bring it in the house for the fall they all fall off. This year they had gotten the largest but still lost them, are yours in the green house all year?Wonder if that makes the difference.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

CC, they go outside in the summer in half a day of sun. Before it gets too cold in the fall, I put them in the green house where the minimum temp is 45*F. It's a variegated lemon, and the fruit is variegated too. I bought all my dwarf citrus trees at Home Depot and didn't pay more than $10 for any of them. Check there in the summer after the bedding plants are gone. That's when they start getting in the potted things. I have a good sized Meyer Lemon that I got there. I really wanted one, but didn't want to pay the high price at the local nurseries. I will try to start some cuttings when new growth starts.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Never seen a citrus anything at our Home Depot,I know that your lemon is variegated,I loved the picture of one on ebay!Didn't know the fruit was too.Thats gotta be the reason it went for so much on e-bay.don't think anyone would pay that much for a regular lemon unless it was huge and bearing fruit. Can you post a picture of yours?Heck ,I paid 25.00 for the grapefruit tree I have, gave it to my Dh for valentines day one year,he still wants a grapefruit from it!Guess the greenhouse is the solution.

Cala,
I have a Calamindon Orange that I bought (pricey here in Canada believe me). It was covered in little tiny Oranges when I bought it and they are still ripening.

After about a month I noticed that the plant was dropping leaves like crazy to I unpotted it to see what the problem was. The roots were completely rootbound and almost no soil at all and obviously the florist had potted it up into a larger pot. However, they did not open up the rootball a little bit before they put in into a bigger pot so the new soil was on top and nothing for the roots to grow into.

I noticed that the plant was obviously a rooted cutting and when I looked really carefully at the stem at the bottom I could see that it branched into 3 distinct stems with roots on them. I took a sharp knife at cut into the base of the plant so there were 3 new pieces with roots. I now have 2 plants as the third cutting did not make it. It was the portion of the intial plant were almost all of the leaves dropped off completely. The other two plants are doing much better and even growing new leaves and still producing new flowers and fruit.

Citrus grown in pots needs lots of fertilizer. I fertilize mine at least once a month and somethimes twice a month. Its been fun to watch them grow and develop.

I just potted up another batch of tangerine seeds and hope that they sprout soon. It does take from 5-7 years for citrus grown from seed to fruit. The also have to go into very large pots and you need at least 2 for them to pollinate one another. In the summer I put mine outside and they do have a significant growth spurt. I bring them indoors over the winter. Even if the fruit is not pallitable they can me used to make marmalade and besides they still smell amazing do I'm not too concerned.

Bayonne, NJ(Zone 6a)

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Most all citrus I have ever seen grown from seed have NEVER fruited..only made large foliage plants that are thorny in some cases.. :-)

Bayonne, NJ(Zone 6a)

Cala:

Well, I called California to get the tree. Boo Hoo! they won't ship. Guess you gotta live in Fallebrook, CA., wherever the heck that is, in order to grow a lemon tree. I asked them about the canker blight and they thought I was wacked soooooooooooo I guess I have to just keep on truckin' now I'm afraid to buy anything on the East Coast.

I still think you are great for tryin' and I am enjoying that link as well ;-)

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

So chances are I'm gunna end up with some big ,thorny, tropical looking trees, huh?I'm just glad they germinated!!!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

My aunt grew from seed an orange years ago, and still has it. It finally set fruit, little lemon sized sour oranges!! It's a very thorny plant, but most citrus has thorns doesn't it? The lemons on my variegated tree are starting to change to all yellow, so maybe they will have seeds. I do know, even if they didn't have edible fruit, the blooms smell WONDERFUL!!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Oh I love it when my grapefruit tree blooms, the sent is awesome!!!Calla,I am dying to see if yours has seeds in it.Are the fruit not striped any more?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

They are almost completely yellow. The little card said to wait till they are completely yellow before picking.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

How many are there?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

CC, there are two. I noticed today that the other citrus plants have little "fruits" where the petals are falling off. I have a Key Lime, a Meyer Lemon and this Pink Lemonade. The Pink Lemonade is the one with 2 large fruits. I bought some extremely large lemons at the store yesterday,(they are as big as juice oranges) do you want the seed?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Where would you get lemons that big???You could make a whole glass of lemonade out of 1 lemon. That would be so cool.I can't beleive the limes I bought were seedless,Ya just know if I wanted them for mixed drinks they would have been loaded with seeds and I'd be pickin them out of the cocktails........

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Carol, check this url for citrus plants... http://www.logees.com/html_pages/Citrus/Citrus_Index.html

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Thanks MaV,thats a great site, and the prices are resonable.I wonder about that citrus collection .Says you get 5 plants ......Any one ordered from them?

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

u're welcome CC. if not mistaken X CITROFORTUNELLA MITIS 'VARIEGATA' is the one that u & Cala were discussing above. here's what the Garden Watchdog ratings are on Logee's http://gardenwatchdog.com/c/35/

Bayonne, NJ(Zone 6a)

Please review the Garden Watchdog Again before ordering. I don't like to make a fuss but I don't want another DG buddy to get burned like I have.
Maybe things have changed at Logees. My dissapointment was embarrasing.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Maybe its not such a great deal.....anyone have other places?
