woo hoo.. shopping!!!
Has anybody started any seeds indoors yet?
Tee hee
Started in late Feb. So far I have worked my way from snapdragons down to tomato seeds (planted last week, just started popping up yesterday). For some strange reason only two of the two dozen pepper seeds I planted two weeks ago came up, first pepper failure in five years! I replanted them a few days ago and am anxiously awaiting results. Most other perennials, annuals and veggies doing well except a few that were 3 or more years old. Some pepper seeds were newly purchased, others just a year old from a seed swap, so have no clue why poor germination occurred, except that the room temperature may have been too low (66°). I made sure to use new planting mix and put more heat under the replanted seeds.
Peppers take longer than any other typical seed here as well. At around 65 degrees it took three types three weeks here to germinate.
Park's sent a package of broccoli seeds, labeled as having 50 seeds, with just two seeds in it so Jack will be giving them a phone call.
that's not good
Wow, I wonder who was counting those? My peppers were spotty....about 3 or 4 have germinated....I'm still waiting on the others.....
Heat mat, heat mat, heat mat...your peppers will germinate in half the time....I swear!
I haven't started my yet...im late this year. I did plant the cantalope on Thursay morning and a few were up yesterday already.
Now you tell me, Pixie....LOL!
some of my t's have been slow to start - replanted - in-laws will not be happy though they love the big mama roma's and they are the ones that have been slow - some are coming up, need at least 8 - planted reg. roma seeds just in case.
peppers came up good this year - yes i used a heating pad.
Hope the toms do well for you, Bill.
"peppers came up good this year - yes i used a heating pad" ^_^ ^_^ ^_^
I just started a few Cherry tomatoes and some Swiss chard. Never grew Swiss chard before. Got to start some Basil and a few other things too. Making a 3x8 foot raised bed this week if the Sun comes out!
I love swiss chard!
do not need to start swiss chard indoors - we sow them in ground.
I have started daylily seeds about a month back. Just today I started mixed ornamental gourds, spaghetti squash, eggplant and peppers. Don't have a heating mat, and not money now, so I guess I'll have to be patient with the pepper seeds. Do eggplant take long to germinate? I've never grown them from seed before. This will be interesting. I'm not a great veggie gardener. My sister is better at it than I am.
Karen
Have never grown eggplant from seed. I bought Swiss chard seeds for the first time....my DH hated it, so that was one veggie I never planted.
have a couple different eggplant going from seed - hope they give some fruit this year
Did you threaten them, Sherrie?
That's really quick, Sherrie!
I forgot to mention that I planted ornamental gourd seeds the other day, too. Most of the other seeds I have (cosmos, marigolds, poppies, columbine, etc.) can just be sown directly in the ground.
When is a good time to sow peas and lettuce outside? Should I be doing that now?
Karen
We don't seem to be getting freezing here anymore, but it is cold. Will have to look that up. I planted some last year, but I don't think I did them early enough. It also got too hot too soon.
Karen
Karen - I plant mine as soon as the ground can be worked. They can take a little frost.
Yes, lettuce & peas can be planted now......
No hummers here, have not seen many migrants yet....
Great! Thanks, Marilyn and Frank. I will plant some this weekend. Going to be a very warm one. Expected to be 60 here on Sat, 70 on Sun. Monday will get in the 80's! That's too hot, too soon, but I'll enjoy it anyways. I have the whole weekend off, including Monday, except for my Sunday overnight, which I hardly count. I will be in shorts by Sunday!
Karen
going to get my feeders out!!!!!!!!
hummer will have to eat insects, nothing in bloom except crocus.
can always add some banana skins
Banana skins? Do hummers like those or am I missing something?
Karen
attract fruit flies if you hang banana peels... and the hummers can eat the bugs
here ya go
Since hummingbirds eat insects as well as nectar, another interesting way to attract hummers is to place some rotting fruit in a small dish. The fruit will attract fruit flies and you can watch as your hummingbirds (especially the young ones) eat the insects

Oh, how interesting!

After reading how they love moving water and will only drink from moving water sources, I was reminded how the hummers here like to hover near me while I'm watering my pots with the watering wand. They liked the water. Maybe they were contemplating taking a dip!
Karen
One year we had a pair of hummers in one of our willow trees (now gone) and on any day that I'd turn on my sprinkler in the garden they'd fly back and forth thru the water.
I love that too.. with our micro sprinklers.. they do it all the time in the morning.. the one was sitting on my plant support just taking a nice shower
