New Clematis's

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Great Jo. Thanks.

I think so too Carolyn. back when Dave had this place, I suggested the ability to post pictures on Garden Watchdog, and he was going to do it, but I'm sure it got lost in the shuffle. But peoples perceptions of what is good is so different, I would like to be able to judge by pictures.

I have ordered from most of the companies and I do have my favorite companies and there is a difference in what they send. The only thing your pictures are not going to show is the level of service that is received in each company. I know there have been a number of postings regarding the excellent service at Brushwood and Silver Star.

I ALWAYS check garden watchdog before I place an order with a company I havnt dealt with no matter what the plant.
Service comments are usually part of the rateing.
We can comment when we post pix..
Personally I like large plants. I suffer from Carpal tunnel and arthritis and cant be bothered replacing dead teeny plants.

There has been 2-3 years talk over the size and price of clematis from all of the above! I think if you search the forums you will get dozens of pictures from all of the above nursery's. I have shopped at all the above, Donahue's, Brushwood, Silver Star and Joy Creek. So far, in my humble opinion, Silver Star and Joy Creek will give you larger two year old plants that are ready to go in the ground. Brushwood is larger than Donahue's, but both go into 1gal to grow for the summer then plant in the fall. The price of the plants go with the size, older more mature plants cost more and cost more to ship. They weigh more. Silver Star can only put two plants in a USPS box where Donahue's can put half a dozen or so. I don't mind babying the plants because I do a lot of them, so I do order some smaller clematis.

Oh, no question, Carolyn. I had requested the pictures as an adjunct to the comments. But if we're going to do a picture thread, let's absolutely comment on the service we got, or whatever.

Personally, I like what will do best for me compared to price. If I can get a plant for 1/4 of the price, and pot it up or baby it along for a few months, I would get it before the full sized plant. But if I get a plant for 1/4 of the price and lose 3 out of 4, then obviously that's no good. Of course I understand where you're coming from, Jo. Luckily I'm not there yet. I am blessed to still be able to garden on my hands and knees. I realize some can't. And I realize some want to get the biggest plant right off and price be danged, but some also don't.

Diamond, I just thought to have it on one thread with pictures would be nice. If that's not wanted, that's fine.

Lets just do this season as its whats under discussion.
Lets also agree we all have different personal reasons for our choices.
I am new to gardening and had just learned about repotting smallies and let them get better roots.

There is a picture showing all three or four in the same picture. I'll go looking after while. By all means post your pictures, let's see if there is a difference from year to year. I think there might be a co-op going on elsewhere for Donahue's, I don't know if it's closed or not. It's the other gardening site.

I'd like to see the photo.
We intended to post pics anyway.

Diamond, why are you potting up the clem for the summer and planting it in the fall? Doesn't it make more sense to plant it where it going in a well prepared site? I'm just not tracking the reason, and I know there must be a good one. As I have several clems coming from sliver star and brushwood, any assist would be helpful.

Dem, I plant my smaller ones in a container and then plant them in the garden in the fall. It's just easier to care for the smaller ones that way. The ones from Brushwood and Silver Star should be large enough to go directly in the garden.

Those are nice roots.

Like pollyk said it is easier to take care of smaller plants up on my patio where they can get individual attention. Out in the yard the small plants get lost, sometimes even pulled when I'm weeding, I weed fast. I can't count all the plants I've pulled up thinking they were weeds. :( I also feed them real well to establish nice roots, and keep them trimmed on top.

diamond, let me give you my address, I'm always looking for weeding help!

My Donahue order arrived today. I potted them up into quart containers and will let them take a break in the basement next to the light tables

So, could we start a new thread and post picture of clematis received? Can you post the picture over there, time?

I'll start the tread.
