I was thinking about getting a Dog Wood Tree, but I'm not sure about the hardiness of one. It would be in full sun, and would be a little close to a Cleveland Pear Tree, and close to a shed. The North East Sun would be hitting it.
Dogwood Tree
Dogwoods should be hardy in your area. You're due east from me, and we can grow them just fine here. They do best with an eastern exposure, protected from the hot afternoon sun. If the soil is really good, they can do fine in full sun, but heavy clay tends to stress them. If the pear shades it in the afternoon, that will help. Look for a good cultivar like 'Cherokee Princess' (white) or 'Cherokee Brave' (burgundy red). Any of the Cherokee line have larger blooms (up to 5" across) and a more full growth habit, and are very hardy (to -24ºF).
Thanks Hoosier
you should also look at the rutgers hybrid dogwoods - they were breed to be disease resistant - i have a couple celestial white's that are very nice.
