When to begin topping Japanese holly hedge

Hello,

A new hedge of Japanese Holly is almost as high as I want it with the exception of one or two plants. Will they grow as fast if I top some of them this year or should I just let it grow until the shortest reaches the proper height? I know yews grow a little slower after they are topped.
