Prune roses when the Forsythia blooms.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

LOL

Oooo Ooooo I did the rose pruning at the right time. Yay!

East Bridgewater, MA

Can you prune Mr. Jagger?

Probably hopeless, and useless since 1973.

And very UNimpressive while "swimming."

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Jagger and Richards have been dead wood for many years now.

Every squash bloom will not produce a squash.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Interesting

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

thier are male and female blooms - that is where the bees come into play - or you can start using fingers like my FIL does

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Pervert!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

thought i would throw you a softball:)

Male and female could end up on Welfare!

Bardstown, KY(Zone 6a)

Bill, a few of the places I've been when I was MUCH younger would charge you or throw you out for that!!!!

Doug

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Holly also has male and female identities.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Does it? How can I tell?
I have 1 holly in my yard and the closest holly is 4 acres away....if mine was female would the male pollinate it from that far away???

East Bridgewater, MA

You have to do a bit of research for holly..I used to know it 25 years ago, but memory fades.

ehow.com says that for holly, a female has to be within 100 feet of a male.

You have to know exactly what you have; sometimes the name will include "Boy" or "Girl" to help gardeners.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

when we moved in it was already here about 1' high now it's about 4'

East Bridgewater, MA

You could cover the situation by purchasing one female and one male, but do they have to be the same variety ???

A REAL nurseryman can help you, but a half-hour on the internet might be more time-efficient.

All joking aside cant it be done manually?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yes if you have both blooms open.. I do that with pumpkins & watermelons .. can even pluck off the male and rub it on the female

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Sure you can. Most people use a small paintbrush.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

How do you know which is male and female? I didn't plant any this year, (is it too late?) but I did last year. Does the female start with a little squash below the flower that shrivels up if not fertilized?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Only by the name. Cannot tell by looking except when you see berries you know it's a female. Similar problem in the village in NYC.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

hehe

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

LOL

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i ask my fil every year because i forget:)

Thomaston, CT

Does anyone fry squash blossoms? My DIL's grandmother does....

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

my fil does

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

This is interesting.....
Gardeners who smoke may be unknowingly spreading disease throughout their gardens. Tobacco mosaic virus is commonly found in cigarettes and cigars. Smokers can easily pick up the virus (which is harmless to humans) on their hands and, when working in the garden, infect some plants. Tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants are particularly susceptible. If you smoke, one way to prevent transmitting the virus is to dip your hands in milk just before venturing into the vegetable patch. The milk deactivates the virus and reduces the probability of transferring the disease to plants.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

If they don't care about their own health, or the health of their family, do you really see them dunking before gardening?!!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I think so, no one likes it when their plants die

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

What if they're lactose-intolerant??

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

hmmmmm

Norridgewock, ME(Zone 5a)

A mixture of honey, yogurt and beer, painted on rocks, will help encourage moss to grow.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Sounds even better for the gardener to enjoy!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

waste of beer!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

agreed!!!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Pollen on your clothes???? just lay them in the sun...stain will disappear....I tried it it works, amazingly

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Sunshine also removes tomato sauce stains

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)
