Yeah!!! It's True:

Ferndale, WA

Cool.. :)

(Zone 5b)

YAY, Congratulations!!

Ferndale, WA

It has taken a long time and a lot of work for these little beauties to finally find their place with the APA & ABA. Not only will it raise their value but they will finally have a place in all the major poultry show's. Having them in your local fair is one thing, but having them in the Major Poultry Show's is quite another...Hay

Congrats from me to

Ferndale, WA

Thank you Green, I'm not so sure how much it means to me, but to others who want to show them will now have that opportunity when the big shows begin. That makes me very happy...I don't like to see people left out who love their birds so much. When people like you who work so hard to love, care, and breed to what is important to them, I think we all gain from that...Hay

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

It is a good thing all around..

Again, I'm the weirdo.. I don't care for all white seramas. LOL Oh boy, I think I just loaded Hay's gun with that statement.. I don't care for red silkies either..

I'm in trouble now..

Ferndale, WA

I didn't hear that....lalalalalalalalala. I just can't believe you said that...I love the pure white...When you watch them struttin across that beautiful green grass there is nothing more graceful to watch. I also love red, it is an intoxicating color. Flambouyant, full of life and makes a statement that say's (Get over it i'm here to stay)...Rotflmbo...Hay

Red Chuckie and white Seramas... I'll have to send you a banty "blue" and you will be so patriotic... LOL

Richmond, TX

I always said, "If you want to sell it to a man, paint it red." Perhaps that works for chickens too?

Ferndale, WA

AhhhhPorkpal your a wise lady...Smiling...Hay

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I like the pure white and very bold colors too Hay. I am not a fan of the solid blue/grays. I had 3 week old blue babies silkies a guy came and got the other day. That was what his daughter wanted. He also took one of the whites after he saw the white hens that are breeder quality out of Hat Trick Silkies line I got a while back.

Ferndale, WA

I love those fluffy looking white silkies. They make you want to hide you face in them...LOL. I can't wait to see the Dutch reds...Hay

The following weights have been approved and established by the ABA/APA for the White American Serama. They are as follows.

Cock...16oz/455grams.
Hen....14oz/398grams
Cockerel...14oz/398grams
Pullet.......12oz/342grams

Richmond, TX

Are the weights different for other colors?

Ferndale, WA

That remains to be seen Porkpal, The reason I say that is because the only color that has been accepted so far is the White. I don't know for sure why that is except I think the ABA/APA is used to dealing with breeds that breed true to color, which is not true of the Serama. The next color that they will have to deal with to be sure is the black. But the white and the black or any other color for that matter must be free from any other color except the accepted color. The Whites must be pure white, no spots or flecks anywhere. That would also be true of the black. I'm sure some day they will have to look at tri-color also perhaps. Each color they accept will have to conform to their weight standards also. Will their be any difference? That remains to be seen...Hay

I was not aware that the whites were the first to be recognized. Do you think that any color can eventually be made to breed true?

Ferndale, WA

Hi Porkpal, that remains to be seen, however with persistience and frequent culling especially in the begining I do think that is very possible. Right now I have five Whites, two roosters and three hens. Eventually when the last two mature (three months) they will be kept in mating pens and I will document and cull as needed. I think it is very possible and I will post pic's of their progress so we can find out together. The whites were the first because of solid color and I have to believe the APA also believes they can be breed to the standard. They the (APA) consider the Serama as a Breed and the White as a Variety. Interestingly enough they also consider their are two different Breeds. First the Malaysian, and then the American. Both breeds have different weight standards. I don't know how they came to that conclusion, but, I would bet money it has a lot to do with the two different environments as well as the different food source...I'm not positive but I would bet money the Blacks will be next. I have no blacks what so ever and must say so far I have not seen any...Hay

Exciting experiment, keep us posted!

Ferndale, WA

I will.

ZZ's If you check out this thread, I wanted to know if you have ever seen any pure black Seramas? Also for anyone else the same question? Has anyone seen any pure black Seramas?

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Haystack, I haven't seen any pure blacks that I know of.. and pure white is rare too.. there are tons of pics of whites, but not pure.. Interesting!

Ferndale, WA

ZZ's I now have five pure whites, they all came originally from Booker...I am just sick. Booker was killed in a wind storm we had here. We have had high winds now for just over a week. We have lost two huge trees and lots, and lots of branches from others. I'm sure it will take me two months to clean it all up. We have broken branches everywhere. I can't even open any of the coops, The large coop has a small door for the girls, but only the gamebirds will come out and they only stay out five minutes and run right back in...They don't like the wind, not even the standards will come out...It blew so hard it broke three eighteen in zip ties and slamed the top of the lid down killing three of my pheasant, booker and one of his ladies...:o(

Oh Hay so sorry to hear that

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh no!!! I'm so sorry Hay!! That is awful... Poor babiez.. I hope the rest are all okay. What a shame.

I thought your whites were "dusted" with rust color, sorry! This makes it double good for you to have them..

Ferndale, WA

OH NO, ZZ's These birds are truly pure white, not even a spot on the under bellies. They are as white as the driven snow...I'll take some pic's tonight and post them for you...Hay Stay tuned.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I saw on fb how bad your weather is Hay.. I'm worried about you, and you just wanna talk about seramas.. what a good sign! :)

That is cool about your lil whites.. Have you gotten white babiez from them yet? How fun! I'm happy for you. :)

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I have one serama baby as of yesterday.. I gotta go see what's goin on today.

(Zone 5b)

Oh Hay, I'm so sorry to hear that!! Hope it clears up soon, hand in there friend. Looking forward to seeing your pure as the driven snow Seramas.

Congratulations ZZ's hope your hatch is a great success...Hay

Notice as you look at the whites in the tail area, the white fades into a kind of grayish tone. Well that is what all the whites look like, almost yellowish, or grayish in the tips of the feathers. The adults used to look that way at first also now they are pure white...The babies are only three weeks old...Hope the pic's help...

Ferndale, WA

Note: I did not start this thread to toot my horn, but rather to give all serama breeders a heads up on whats going on with serama in relationship to the APA as it surely does affect the value of your birds that fit the standard. I think we should all keep an eye open for the acceptance of the pure blacks next. I just found a couple blacks on line and am working on a deal for them before the are accepted...Hay

Richmond, TX

Your birds look like a good foundation for breeding the pure whites. Good luck!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

They are beautiful Haystack! Best of luck with them..

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

they are so pretty Hay

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Some friends of mine have a tiny white rooster that is mean as the dickens. The call him a banty but I have never seen one like him until you guys posted pics of the seramas. He is built just like your pics with his head back and his chest out. He has a short back and a tall tail. I just can't figure where they would have gotten him unless it was at the flea market and he was sold as a banty. I'll have to write and ask them.
