I have this filed in "Underwing" in my caterpillar photos, but I can't find evidence I ever posted and got an ID. When disturbed, this guy would thrash violently back and forth. Second photo shows the top side.
CLOSED: Underwing ?
This indeed a larva of an underwing moth (Lepidoptera: Erebidae; tribe Catocalini); likely that of Catocala ilia - see http://tinyurl.com/4tqutq4 for an example (there are several subspecies).
Thanks Suunto.
