That is the worst! I hate those plugs, & that's what they sell around here.....beyond annoying!
2011 Garden Projects
That is why I buy 95% from trusted online sources.
i bought one of those plugs at mahoney's several years back - an echi - man was i pissed - i always try to remember to check the root system - does not usually happen at an upscale place like mahoney's - still go there.
i am having the same problem with azelea's - i have picked out several weston nursery azelea's and online victor's folks at fairweather have the best prices - the weston nursery is on my commute to work - 3 gallon container is $45 - fairweather is $16 - i am looking a 9 different ones - that is a lot of $$ at $45 a pop. do not know what i will do yet.
need to call FW and understand what size pot's they are in.
Mention that you're a FOV - Friend of Victor - and you will get the best. ^_^
will they know what fov means? :)
Trying to decide on an arbor/gate/fence combo for the edge of my driveway. Like one of the ones from Plow and Hearth, but their fence is only three feet high. I would like at least four. Otherwise, the basketball will probably bounce over it. And three just looks silly small.
Priced some real wrought iron stuff online, but wow is it expensive!
i put together my p&h arbor and set it up today - it needs one more panel on either side to be high enough - it is taller than my head by a lot - the ground slopes down so it makes it look shorter - not over the top about it to be honest.
Which model did you get??
will have to wait until the p&h arrives - it was not the jeffereson named one - it is usually the first one shown - what i do like about it is the it blends in and does not take away from the rock wall
Montebello??
yes - not that one.
I'm gunna look. I like P&H.
The one I was considering is the 'Elegant Scroll' one.
this is too funny - i did get the Montebello arbor without the gate.
Senility??
Plugs are discussed often here. I have seen it done. I was asked if I wanted to do it and I said no. Was offered to buy the plugs for 55 cents apiece (the guy would make money on them also).
They plant them and fertilize at least every 3rd watering, sometimes sooner. The plugs will have more then 2 sets of "TRUE" leaves and the fertilizer is potent. With the suns out and in a green house, in a week they look like they have been growing for months and they put the big dollar price tag on them.
One of our sources puts the plugs in 4" pots and sells them as is for a couple of bucks. They're only a few inches high so you know what you're getting. Plus they guarantee the plants and I've only had to take one back in all the years I've dealt with them. It was and is a good way to get a mass planting of the same variety for a reasonable price.
I do buy plugs to grow out and love them when I know they are plugs and sold as such. It is a good way to buy a mass of some things cheap, but not all plugs do well and need some real TLC to grow them out. Patti
I love to visit my sister in Ithaca NY
There is a greenhouse that opens early when the warm weather is really here. I bought starter plants there and agree with Frank and Patti about a mass of plants for not too much money. Agastaches and Penstemons. Loved them.I just transplanted Agastache Apache sunset.to the new garden where I dug the torch lilies.
Its gunna look great
I'm planning on starting some Penstamons, Navigator series, from seed this year. Some I start early and the remainder I plant directly outside. I have a couple of other perennials to start too.
Many penstemon are short lived, & many like arid conditions...Husker Red is reliable all over, I guess. I have about 5 or 6 varieties in the per. beds.....if they made it through the winter! You'll love the verbascum, Jo...
I got some Huskers Red last year, hoping they return, I didn't see any at GroMoore this year.
Husker's Red will do fine for you, Debi....it's very hardy....hybridized at U. of Nebraska....
I was gabbing so much at GroMore I didnt really look.
I went back today and looked more slowly. Jack was there and gave me a big hug. I'm sure I look like $$ in his eyes.
I really mistreated the Husker's Red last year so I'll be surprised if it returns, if not, I will try again.
They DO have great customer relations there. I'll bet I get a hug from the old guy.
Jo, & Debi, I will up there the second week of August....save some plants for me!
Yippppeeee we will try a mini RU
That would be an ru??
