Look at these pussy willows....

Navarre, FL(Zone 8b)

I bought some pussy willows at a grocery store last year. The florist area there had them in bunches and stuck in a 5 gallon bucket with about 4 inches of water in it. When I picked out a bunch, I noticed they had roots starting. So, for $5.00, I bought a bunch. I planted them in pots and they grew real nice, so then I planted them by the fence. This year, this is what they are doing. What are the pussy willows doing getting all big like that?

I need to go check my local grocery store! Very pretty!

Oh, the big catkins on French pink pussywillow - I just love them! I had a 30' tree of these back in Missouri - a tornado took it out, but it was SO STUNNING! I'd like to get another one. I just got a single curly willow from the florist shop at Winn Dixie - it's now sitting in the water lily tub, rooting.

All pussy willow catkins will get this way after they are past their prime. They send out what I believe are pollen-bearing anthers. Didn't they do this last year?

No, they didn't do that last year. But then I just bought them as cuttings that had started to root at the store. So this is actually the first year they have grown in soil. I got them last Spring or early Summer.

Then, that's what's up. Nothing to worry about. Nice growth from cuttings. Congrats! They should really take off this year for you.
