Birds Nesting & Activities in Our Garden 2011 Vol. #2

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Correction; above pix was wrong pix. That was the the new male BB caught trespassing.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Well there not much development with other nesting candidates. The White-breasted Nuthatch pair appear to be incubating? One remains inside the nest lot of time, and its partner has been seen bringing food to feed her (?). One thing that I've noticed. This is the only pair that I find lately in the garden. (Not one other Nuthatch was seen around the vicinity).

I can't wait to see those fledges!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Yes, me too, Pelle. I bet they are cute as can be.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Me too, I can't wait either. lol. I so wished I've a webcam to monitor their progress.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Right! I was thinking it would be nice to set up my bird cam there at least. lol.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

A bird cam. will do. lol Well I missed out on many photo opts. today. The C. Chikadees continually come and go at the BB's nest box for almost 2 hours, then finally the BBs returned and shooooo-ed them off. Here is Papa Blue right outside my window.

Wow, the fight continues! I think it's time for a second house! Maybe one with a smaller hole that only the chickadees can use.

I afraid the Dees are going to win out. As the weather is getting nicer. I'll be out there in the garden more often, and only Dees will tolerate my being close. lol.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I'm not sure who is going to win out. Yesterday the Dees were quite busy with the nest box for hours on end. This morning Mama Blue checked out the nest and looks as if she found some twigs and rid off it.

I haven't found out where the Redheaded Woodpeckers' currently making their nest. Although, they still call my back yard their territorry. Here Lord Byron just chased off Mitch--the Redbellied Wp.

Nor do I know where this fella (Mitch) is building his nest. Last several years both the Redbellied and Redheaded have brought their fledglings to the feeders. I can't wait until the process unfolding once again this year.

Error; above pix is that of Mitch's better half. lol. It is his Missus. Rarely can I catch a pix of the two together. However, lately they show up as a pair quite often. Just missed photo opts.

At the mean time, the male Nothern Flicker is deligently working on his nest on an oak tree nearby. The Dees are exploring other nesting possibilities. But, look! They have new contenders: The Titmice!

Everyone ship your extra bird houses to LL, she has a housing need explosion!

I should go look for nests in the neighborhood. Last June a dead tree came down in a storm…about a block from here. Im sure it was home to something as you could see the holes. A couple years back I had a bunch of downy fledges so I figured they were from nearby.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

You are right about LL's explosion!! I would be in 7th heaven if I had all those birds fighting over the houses here. I had hoped to have the Bewicks Wren nest in one of the boxes so I put a reducer on it and the darned House Sparrows still fit in it. I am going to put a smaller reducer on it and see what happens.

The Blues stopped by yesterday and checked out a few boxes but so far there is no nesting going on in our area at all. I am very jealous of all your action Lily!!

Rose & Marna please come down and visit. This is the best time of year in this part of the country. Temp. is going to be on the 80'ish but still cool at night. These poor nesters have no clue as to the heat of summer we're heading into. Last year I witnessed the Cardinals sitting on their nest gasping for air due to the extreme heat.

I'm trying to enjoy this beautiful season as much as I can, won't you all come down and join me?

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

OOO, I'd love to. Do you have broadband wireless so that I can work from the Dock? ;-)

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

The Northern Flicker was tirelessly working at his new home-- for hours on ends. It was funny I noticed he pauses to look for the source of noise evevery time my dog barked from the front of the garden.

Wireless broadband? No, we're not that technological advance yet! LOL, see that blurry spot on the pic. above? (right smack on the 6 o'clock position of the photo). That's is the spot on the glass window that I shot the picture thru the dirty glass. lol

To make up for that short coming. We'll take you down the river and see the Swallows building their community nests around this time of year...oooh yah, don't forget the Eagles Nest with their eaglets less than 10 miles away from here.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Wow...what a tempting invitation! We have friends we keep threatening to visit across the bay from Mobile...if we ever make the trip we will certainly stop
by and torture you!! Warning...DH is a real talker!!

Love the Flicker shot and it's ok to have dirty windows!!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Thanks Rose, your Darling H is welcomed here for I'm a practicing good listerner. :)
Ding ding ding!!! I just saw the C. chickadee with nesting material on his beak entering the 'Redhot tomalee' errr Red Hot Pepper-like nest box posted above.

Now I'm aiming for the C. Wrens and Titmice to find their own.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

How cool it would be if the Dees select the pepper nest....good luck!! (You are so danged lucky)!!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Rose, I'm very very lucky. When the time is right, it happens. Marna, I've several other nest boxes hung around the garden for Wrens and Titmice hope they'll discover them in time. I noticed the Cardinals pair were weaving within our bamboos grove in the front where they once built their nest last year. Those will come next.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

A different kind of bird, lol. Marna, could you help confirm if this is a Redspotted Purple bfy?

Nope. try again. Hint. It's got TAILS

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Yippie! Black SwallowTAIlS? No way? yes way. Hah I've put some curled parsley out the other day.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Actually, I"m thinking Female Tiger Swallowtail, black form.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Ooops! Female TS huh, I'll try to remember that. Thanks Marna.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Not much happening today with the nesting. Although, the BBs actively come and go at the nest box but they haven't begun their building process? Mama Blue arrived earlier today. I noticed Papa Blue also came by and went inside the box himself. But the rest of the time, I only noticed they perched on high branches to hunt for bugs.

Papa Blue gotta go in to inspect the interior setting.

The Dees seem to be contented with their chosen home (the red peppers house), thus I've not seen them trespassing the Blue Bird's nest box. Not sure this is the future ma or pa Dee here;

As I watched the enthusiasm the Cardinals couple were demonstrating yesterday in the front yard. I had a suspiscion that they would soon build their nest (as they did last year). This morning, Mama Cardinal was loudly protesting my present as I passed by the bamboos groove. Sure enough she has straws in her beak. Then I saw the almost complete nest. No pix of the nest here, since I didn't want to discourage the couple. They built the nest in less than a day!!! I would surmise since before sunrise this morning.
