These things are driving me crazy

Crestview, FL

I don't know how these bugs got into the house and how come there are so many of them. I don't have a camera but can discribe it to a T, I have been swatting them like crazy. They are longer than a fly and skinnier than one; but have the same type wings, they are black and love hanging out in my windows, what are they, and they are not fruit flies. I have my seed starter kit real close to the windows and have been swatting them dead, as I don't want them attacking my seedlings.

You really need to get a photo somehow, as your description could fit any number of critters, from fungus gnats to beneficial parasitic wasps.

Well I discovered they are NOT termites, they are NOT flying ants; and they seem to have a stinger on them, the terminex guy took one in to find out what they are then tomorrow I will know for sure. I suspect it is some kind of bee or wasp maybe? But how did it get into the house and how did it populate so fast, they need to be outside to protect my plants, sniffles.

If they appear to have a 'stinger', that more likely is an ovipositor that the wasp would use to insert its eggs into the intended host for its larvae. Just a note of caution, pest controllers are not always the most reliable source for insect identification. I suggest that you take some specimens to your county office of the University of Florida's Cooperative Extension Service - see http://tinyurl.com/4qf8d9d for contact information. These extension offices usually are a good starting point when dealing with most home/yard/garden pest problems.

It turns out, they were soldier flies, apparently they were attracted to the compost tea I'm using on my plants this year. I have eradicated them.
