These caterpillars were all shot in Maryland in the summer of 2010.
CLOSED: Feeding on New England aster bloom.
I suspect that this could be a tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae); another extremely variable species - see http://tinyurl.com/4p6tuvr and http://tinyurl.com/4w2sk4u for a couple of examples.
