Bird Nesting & Their Activities in Your Garden & Mine 2011

While in the area, the BB also stopped by to look at this house. Last spring I thought they may 'sign the lease' on this one. But they rejected the house then. Who knows what happens with this year progress.

Have you thought of dropping the rent ?
Poor beggars might start laying eggs on the ground like mine. ;-(

How ugly are these ?

LOL, good pic!

Poor babies! They look so vulnerable. Whose are their parents, Ginger?

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

This is mum.
She is a Willie Wagtail. (Rhipidura leucophrys)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willie_Wagtail

I will be adding the whole set to 'Birds from Queensland' soon. :-)

Ah! One of my favorite (smaller) birds from Margaret's Ospreys threads, beside the Ospreys themselves. :) Thanks Ginger.

Love the Willy Wagtails!

Lily...it is a treat to see all the birds in your area and the competition for the nest boxes!! You have got so much action and how fortunate that you have such
a wonderful view of all that is happening. I remember the year you had the Phoebes nesting and hope you get them again. I thought I heard one this morning but that could be wishful thinking on my part!!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Thank you Rose, with the blessed view, and a camera to capture the experience is a real treat. Unfortunately, the Phoebes have yet decided to rebuild their nest this year. However, the lovely Carolina Wrens may--just may now that one of them have discovered my mealworms set up in the garden.

It is unusual to see a solitary young in a nest.

Hey Lily, looks like only you and I have nests in our back yards. :o(

Awww, the solitary youngen seems to grow well, look at the fuzzy downy feather. Ginger, since I'm in the Southern State, perhaps, due to warmer spring temp. here thus more birds' activity with nesting. Thanks for contributing to the thread.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

Do you get these Nests where you are ?

Thumbnail by ginger749
Central, AL(Zone 7b)

No, that's a neat looking nest build with mudd? We've Swallows that build cummunial Mudd houses in the thousand beneath bridges nearby here. We jokingly call those houses 'condos' dwellers.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

This is a single egg inside.
I never did get a Picture of this young one.

Yes it is a swallow.
Not sure which one ?

OK, Just found it on an Australian Birding Site.
He is called a 'Welcome Swallow'.

I won't have nests for probably another 4-6 weeks.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Marna, I hope you will join in and share your nesting birds in the garden with us once they begin. Like I've mentioned before Brown Thrashers are busying nesting preparation here too. I was so tickled that DH proudly announced the other day that a Brown Thrasher with twigs in his beak. I think we've 2 BT's nests. One on our front Rose arbor, the other in the sideyard. Wheeeeees!!!!

Since last weekend, there are these pair of Blue Birds rountinely come to check out the new nest box to the side yard on a daily basic. Today, the female arrived with her beau, then she went into the house as usual while he stood guard. Then a Chickadee, perhaps didn't know the Blue was inside? She arrived mins. later, and tried to enter the house. Needless to say she(the chikadee) exited the bird house in no time flat. And the handsome blue beau just stood their there and showed no aggression. I'm still not sure either has stake claim to the nest box. But the BBs have staked out in the vicinity more and more often throughout the day today. Here is the male Blue just minutes ago.

Very nice pics Lily!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

I sure will share! Sounds like the blues are the winners. awww. feel sorry for the chickadee though!

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

This is the most pathetic nest I have seen in one of my own trees.
I have been busy with repairing fences after the floods. [500 metres lost]
So I don't know who built it.

What a lovely snug little nest. :-)

That is nice!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Ginger, the first one looks kinda like a messy nest that a Dove may have built? The second one -- is that a hummingbird's like next? Cool looking.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

Hi Lily,
Our Doves don't even build a nest.
They just lay their eggs on a Palm leaf.
Looks more like an Eagle or a very big Bird.
I will soon know I guess.

The second nest is a Blue Fairy Wrens nest.
And this is the Male.
I'm still waiting for eggs.

Your BFW is adorable! Please share pix of eggs.

Marna, the Carolina Chickadees are pretty persistent little darling. I don't believe they have given up their quest for a home yet. I'll keep you posted.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

For today Mama Blue perched near by the nest and appeared 'right at home'...about 10am.

...just now though, I saw the Chickadee entered the nest box. awww I hope they won't get into a battle over the nest box. Pix is too blurry to post.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

maybe you can put up a second box with a hole restrictor for the chickadee.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Do tell, how small should the hole be please? Maybe a cut out- pvc ring attatchment onto the opening will do the job?

Rather than start the whole story again.
Here is a link to the complete story from Daves Garden.

It starts about half way down the Thread.

Very nice thread Ginger. I need to spend more time there. Okay, here is a thrill of the day. I finally get to see the 2 eaglets at the nest nearby where we live. It's roughly 8 miles from here.

Thumbnail by Lily_love
Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

Cool shot. [can you get any closer ?]

Did you save the environment and walk there ?

Marlton, NJ

Congrats Lily!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Thanks Pelle, Ginger, no I didn't walk the miles nor could I get any closer to the nest. I did jog for 2 miles at the Gym however. Backhome in the backyard. My chickadees haven't given up on the potential nest site;
(pix taken this am).

How exciting, LL!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Either way ... I'll be happy to see the 'Good guy' win. Although, I don't see HOSP nor Starlings nearby, but I have seen Brownheaded Cowbirds passing through the garden. I just get worried for their safety.

Lily,
I have decided to put these two Pictures here for those that can't find my old Thread.

Thanks Ginger for sharing them here. That's just adorable! How in the world can they manage to keep the nest from tipping over? What kind of hatchlings are they?

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

Picture # 2.

They are the Willie Wagtails.
This is what they sound like:
