Prune Chinese Fringe Tree?

Lincoln, CA(Zone 9b)

What is the proper way for a Chinese Fringe Tree (Chionanthus retusus) to grow? Mine has branches all heading up separately more like a shrub. It is about 5 years old.

It has great white blossoms in the spring and the tree looks healthy enough but I'm not sure if the structure is good or not. Maybe this is the way it normally grows.

Anyone have experience with this tree?

Gee, I don't see anything wrong with the structure...
I'm jealous - I have 4 or 5 fringe trees, both american and chinese, but mine are dwarfs compared with yours.
Love the blooms. Here's my american fringe tree blooming last spring.
