Dreaming of Spring!!!! Blooms from 2010
Cem9165, your post really has my juices flowing, but I have a long wait until mine start to bloom. Lucky you. I am happy to see your N.Apricot Whirl as I planted that for the first time and will be looking forward to seeing it this spring. It looks a little like Narcissus Mary Gay Lirette but more frilly. Looks like a winner. Patti
Thanks Patti. I added more Apricot Whirl last fall, it's a beautiful split cup. Can't wait for Spring either. Everything is coming out nicely, and the small irises and crocus are blooming already. Can't wait for the daffs and tulips to start blooming. Annette
Nice pics:) I haven't tried any of the split cup varieties. Looks like I might need to find room for some of them this fall.
Patti, those are beautiful. What are the names of those daffs? Annette
Cathy -
Your alliums are so dreaaaaaaaaamy! I planted some for the very first time this last fall. I'm very worried, because we went from freezing temps to the 60 for the last 2 weeks (VERY strange and unusual for this area). Consequently, all my bulbs have popped up prematurely - even my allium, and I'm so worried that they are up too early - especially since our winter is far from over and another freeze is most likely on the horizon.
Any advice? When do yours usually start coming up?
Cem9165, I labeled each photo so you can see when you click on it. I am a nut for Narcissus. We planted another 525 yesterday during a rare thaw that I had bought super cheap in Jan, assuming I could get them in the ground at some point before spring. Bleek twisted my arm, but I knew they would be excellent ones. His bulbs are always the best. It started out at 44 in the morning and by evening it was back to winter, 22F. Got very windy. I can hardy move today. So the otal bulb count planted for this season was 5085.........nuts, but it will be pretty.
Alliums are always loved too, but then all spring bulbs are at my house. My favorite Allium has been Globemaster, but I didn't add any of that one last fall. I added more Mt. Everest and am trying one called A.Early Emperor that I got in the B&B sale along with more A. Firmament which is very dark, but not as big and late. I also order a couple from KLEHM'S that are short. A.Snowcap and one called A. Blue Eddy. I will be posting pictures if spring ever comes. Here are some from the past. Just have snowdrops so far. Patti
Here are some Alliums from past years
Knitty, alliums start very early and look like a pretty little rosette if I recall, When I first saw them pop up so early, I wasn't sure what they were. As the leaves grow, and they grow a lot, the bloom is still inside maturing. By the time it sends up its stem, it's got to be several weeks later, and by that time, the strap-like leaves are pretty well shot.
I always try to photograph the progress of the garden to refresh memory, but I don't remember the smaller alliums.
We did a lot of container gardening on our deck last year, but I was not as pleased with the production from the bulbs. The fritillaria, which can be seen as healthy new plants, died early on, probably because they were planted improperly.
Knitty, I finally found a photo of the giant allium from March 12, 2009 (a more normal winter). As you can see, it was up before anything else. Most of the early bulbs are smaller plants, and I knew it wasn't a tulip.
Bbrook, you are sooo organized. I got Globemasters for the first time this past fall.
Wonderful spring-yearning pictures! I have iris rets and crocus beginning to flower already. And it's supposed to be mid 70's here today. I know it won't last, but...big sigh!
Patti, just wondering which of the split cups are your favorites/best performers. There are some real beauties there, too.
Gorgeous! I cannot wait. I love the alliums - I put in Ivory Queen this past fall.....
Carolyn22, at first I wasn't sure I liked the short alliums like A. Ivory Queen when I planted them in 2006, but now I am a real fan. I planted another dozen of them in 2009 to a different bed and now I am going to be adding more of it next fall to a new bed that I will be planting this spring.
tggfisk, Choose my favorite kid? Not easy. I have planted these Narcissus Division 11 - Split Cupped since 2006 (no journal for years prior) and I think maybe my top 3 would be Edinburgh, Palmares and Trepolo. You could throw Colbanc and Mary Gay Lirette in that list too.
I added a bunch last fall which I am anxious to see. But thanks to your question, I will add a column to my journal that will allow me to rate all my Narcissus. A few on this list are droopy or go through radical color swings which I need to note too. I will post a better answer after the Narcissus season. Snowing now, so it is a perfect day for researching for some new ones for fall 2011. Patti

wonder what the problem could be?
It is possible that I just missed them as I do go away in the spring and early summer each year which I hate, but something always comes up. When do they bloom for you? I could recheck my photo's to see if they are lurking in a shot. Love a mystery. They should have bloomed in 2009/10. Both of those years were plagued by major medical issues for me, so I was kind of out of it. I am determined to have a healthy 2011 and take lots of photo's. These of Ivory Queen are the ones that I planted in the fall of 2009 in a new bed that will look so much better this year. It features Japanese Maples and a zillion bulbs. Natch. Patti

checking my journal, the Pulchellum and the Flavum bloom in July. The little pink flower to the left of Flavum is a dahlia, so definitely after the dahlias start flowering.

That is exactly the time period that I have the least pictures from, but I am still looking. Thanks, Patti
Still more envy inducing pictures:)
Patti...I always intend to journal, but thanks to 10 hour workdays, it's still an intention sadly. Having said that, I'll be content to have inspired you to add to yours. Thanks for the list! Some of those will decidedly add some of those to my list and be looking for your further insight.
I must try some of those little yellow aliums!
