Viscous Wiggly Pond Life. White long worm things long tails.

Melbourne, Australia

We just found a cluster of these things in a bucket full of rain. They are eating mosquito larvae (the smaller creatures also in the water top right).

See this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gjSeVVUMcA

Location: Melbourne Australia (in February summertime here).

Thanks.

Edit: You think I would know how to spell "Vicious" by now, sorry for the spello in the threat title.

These are rattailed maggots, larvae of certain flies in the family Syrphidae (hover/flower flies). They are harmless scavengers - see http://tinyurl.com/nrk2mv for details.

Wow - that is possible one of the worst sounding name you could get as a youngster - poor things.

Thanks for your help - I'll put away the gas and matches then.

eating the mosquito larvae? That'd be great! I can't view the video at the moment due to my computer blocking all videos.
