All this snow and cold weather is really getting old. I needed something to cheer me up so I've been looking through garden catalogs and photo albums and hoping for an early Spring. I can't wait to see the tulips poking up through the ground. I have 400-500 planted. The one in the pic is my favorite. It is a Monsella. After the dark, dreary days of Winter, I especially love the tulips with the brighter colors. I'm sure other tulip lovers have a favorite and I would love to see some pics posted. Dan
Favorite tulip
Beautiful tulips everyone.
I ordered, along with another person on DG, some Sun Lover and Yellow Pomponette, which are similar to Monsella. I got them from ADR bulbs, and they were just gorgeous bulbs, really good size. But----I swear I got the 50 box, and somehow ended up with the 100 box. Towards the end of planting them I felt like throwing them towards the woods to see how far I could throw.
4-500, Dan!!!!! Can't wait to see the pictures.
Really good looking containers, jmorth. You'll have some gorgeous flowers indoors.
Roseycats, I planted a bunch of Parrot tulips last fall and can't wait to see them. Polly, I usually dig up areas about 2'x4' and plant 30-40 bulbs at a time. I've seen people plant them one at a time with an auger and don't think I'll try that.
Hey! Dan, You have a lot of beautiful tulips, I can just imagine how beautiful your place will look this spring with all the added Tulips.
Hope you post picture's when all your Tulips bloom. Due to space, I planted only 6 0r 7 bulbs together, but put them in about 8 different places with other flowers. "Flaming Parrot Tulip"

Jmorth, like your "Banja Luka" Where did you find them?
Roseycats, I love those Parrot tulips. I planted some of those Flaming Parrots last fall along with some white parrots and blue parrots (in my never- ending search for a" little more blue" tulip). My biggest mistake was two years ago, when I crammed too many into too small of a space. They all grew and bloomed but the second year they all came up but only 50-60% of them bloomed. Some say this is typical of some types of tulips but i'm wondering if there was too much competition for nutrients. I'm having a hard time imagining seeing tulips right now. I just shoveled 8" of snow from a double driveway and it's still coming down. I think that groundhog lies! LOL
We're really getting hit here, too. Stinkin groundhog.
Isn't that strange about Leen Van Der Mark. Although, I must say I love them in both their stages.
Dan, Thanks, You must be up North from where we live. I'm sorry to hear that you got 8" of snow between last night and this morning. We got an awful lot of rain here, then turned to snow, only about 1" or 2". We have been pretty lucky so far this year.

roseycats,
Banja Luka were probably from Scheepler's, though Brent and Becky's usually have them available as well.
Thanks, Jmorth, will check it out.
Went outside today to see if anything was going on, and sure enough my Tulips are starting to pop up, which really surprised me, because I never noticed my Tulips coming up this soon.
Does anyone else have Tulips coming up?
I noticed some emergence as well- lillies, Magic lily foilage and daffodils. I'll have to look for some tulips tomorrow.
My Daffodils are coming up more than the Tulips, I just hope they don't get damaged by the cold weather.

Tulips have surfaced as well...; also noted Crocus, Snowdrops, daylily foilage...
I adore tulips, the more the better. Here are collages of some favorites that we have in our garden. I do change what we plant each year, and rely on many perennializing for us for at least a few years, but there are some I can't live without no matter if they are one season wonders. They should be all up soon along with all the zillion other bulbs that we plant each year. The pictures are labeled for Id if you enlarge them. I am going to post a bunch of collage. Enjoy. Narcissus are my real passion, another story. Patti
Patti, All I can say is "WOW". That is a fantastic display. I have to constantly spray mine with deer deterrent every Spring to keep from having them completely destroyed. With the frequent Spring rains it seems I'm spraying several times each week. I have given some thought to slowly transitioning over to all daffodils, but seeing you photos reminds me why I still need the bright colored tulips after a long winter. I am slowly learning what those "long-legged rats" won't eat. They haven't touched my Dahlias..... yet. Thanks for posting the pics. Dan
Ohhhhh, Patti!
Dan, We only have tulips that are planted within the beds in the deer fenced part of our property, about a half an acre. We have a total of about 2 1/2 acres so only a small part is fenced and free of the hoved rats, otherwise we would have no tulips in the garden. We are a mecca for deer, perhaps 80 to 100 of them in our square mile alone. Nantucket is overrun with herds of them since being introduced in the 30's by a summer visitor from Mich. Hunting season isn't very effective, nor are our 2 border collies. The girls don't work nights or do windows.
We are on the edge of thousands of acres of open moors that is now, thankfully, conservation land. We see the deer daily or signs of them. We have left a good chunk of the property for them to munch through as they desire, but we are constantly moving plants that we have used to landscape that area they never use to eat to behind the deer fence. Then we try new "deer proof" plants.....ha, nothing is "deer proof", ever. But I never ate snails as a kid either. Our winter has been mild and mostly snow free, so they have not been so bad this year.
The rabbits are worse, so we even have to spray inside the deer fence to be safe. We have lined at the bottom of the deer fence with coated rabbit fence, as those evil bunnies just eat through the deer fence and eat everything in the garden beds, especially my lilies that are also planted in large numbers. But we win more than we loose these days.
I am so excited to see all the new stuff emerging and will post lots of shots when we have more than just snow drops. Of course I am expanding the garden in the deer zone and will suffer some loses. I ordered more Siberian Iris that the deer tend to ignore last week for those new beds from our very own PollyK. Speaking of............
PollyK, I didn't want to go bonkers with my favorite tulips and missed some obvious ones like, Tulipa Professor Rontgen. It would be like you trying to choose iris. Too too many that I love for different reasons.
Here is an album of Spring shots from last year with a few Narcissus to tempt you.

franknjim, I have never seen Twister, nor have I grown Lucky Stike, not sure why???? lovely looking, but know the other two and especially like Banja Luca. I will plant more of those next fall again, if the old ones are thining out. World Expression has me confused as I have it listed in my Journal as suppose to be a " Creamy yellow with red flames" and mine came up very white and red, nice, but not what I expected for where I had planted it in 2007. It was still going strong last spring, in the wrong place, of course. Always the way. Patti
