Could someone identify this spider? It has a greyish body approx 15mm in length, legs red tending hairy grey towards body. Total length 50-55mm.
CLOSED: Unknown spider
This spider is in the family Nephilidae, variously known as golden silk spiders, golden orb weavers, or giant silk spiders. Now in a family of their own, they have in the past been included in the families Araneidae and Tetragnathidae - see http://tinyurl.com/45bbcef for details. Your specimen is in the genus Nephila; see http://tinyurl.com/ao7xo3 for some Australian examples. They all are harmless to humans.
