Had to Share!! My first Maran egg!

(Zone 5b)

Eufaula, are you not eating any of your eggs, or just keeping the marans eggs around for eye candy? I still have not eaten one of my chickens eggs, scrambled or fried, but will use them in recipes.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Oh I eat them Annie , not often but I eat them! I usually give them away at the Outreach where I work!
I do however use them in recipes whenever the " I just have to cook something" bug hits! ( Such is the life of a single gal)

(Zone 5b)

That is almost the best part of having chickens, giving eggs away. I keep my parents, sisters and aunts supplied with eggs. They won't buy them from the store anymore. My girl's can hardly keep up with the demand - which is how I justify buying so many chicks this spring! :-)

You should blow out those maran eggs and save the shells for decorations.

I'm gonna post a sign in my coop... Either I buy chicken feed, or I buy eggs.. You decide! That will get the slackers in gear huh?

Ferndale, WA

Great idea ZZ's, I'm just waiting to see what sign they send back to you...LOL...Hay

The Wheaten Marans is also a dark egg but, not quite as dark as the black copper. The Welsummer egg should also be dark, but closer to a terracotta dark redish brown...I would never trust hatchery chickens to be purebred. I have had to many that I know were mixed...Also you can't get black copper or wheatens from the hatchery...Hay

Love it ZZ! I only have one Welsummer, cant wait until her eggs arrive! I Know , I Know! You are all thinking I'll have a special shelf lined up with Maran and Wellie eggs!

Hmmmmmmm.... Wheres my Hammer and saw?????

That's it. I'm going to get some BCMs. Where do I get them from?

Ferndale, WA

Most generally people buy fertile eggs to get their BCM's, the unfortunate part of that is that they generally sell for around seventy five - a hundred bucks a doz. They are also more critical to hatch as their shells are much harder than normal. The humidity has to be around 75% the last few days or they have a very tough time breaking the shell to get air. A person is much better off to buy the birds if possible but expect to pay a higher than usual price than a regular chicken. I think personally it is best to buy from someone that is reputable and pay a little more than to try and get them cheaper from those less reputable. Just my opinion...Hay

I ordered Black Copper & Wheatons from Hodges Farms. They aren't cheap but like Hay said at least you have a chick.

I will surely look into it. I'd like to get some and breed for olive eggers.

(Zone 5b)

Rita knows the recipe for olive eggers. It starts with a Black Copper Maran to an EE'er, and then there is a second generation to make the egg an even darker olive. Something about the shape of the comb too. Maybe she'll check in and let us both know! Some of the olive eggs are a drab olive, not very pretty.

Well I spoke with a friend in my Poultry Meetup group and he is wanting to give me one of his surplus Wade-Jeanne line Roosters. I have 2 WJ Hens now so I am a happy camper!

(Zone 6b)

Woohoo Eufaula, things are looking up.
