Heres the first OOPS my little girl had! Bad photos but I was egg cited! I was very dissapointed too! I thought maybe she just wasnt going to be up to standards! A lot of strangeness to her first egg. A very thin squishey shell , so bad it actually crushed in when she layed it. The color looked as if it had been sprayed on with a very bad paint gun. half the shell wasnt even colored!
Some really pretty speckles though!
Then today when my Buff O got through laying her egg I found this...Yaaaay! Im sooooo Happy!
Looking forward to seeing what she lays later on.

How old is she? And did you get her as a chick or hatch from an egg? I am thinking about hatching some Marans in March.
Off topic, but not really since coons have gotten some of your babies , but did the trap work ? If it did , then what did you do with the culprit ? When we carry them off , we just open the trap and they are glad to take off to find a new home .

Since this is an egg thread, can I ask this? My pretty white silkie, the one I want to get some eggs hatched from still has not laid an egg. She must be a year old now. Is something wrong with her?

Speaking of eggs.. does anyone have a favorite person to order fertilized eggs from on ebay or BYC? I need to get Goat some eggs to sit on, the golf balls are getting uncomfortable for her. I'd like some L Orps, Black C M's, intelligent Wellies, Buckeyes, dark olive eggers... the list is endless!

Ruth has Olive Eggers I forget her BYC name I think she is N. Miss. I ordered some and it was a couple of weeks before she could fill it and we had a hard freeze so she refunded me because I wanted to wait until it warmed up
Yeah, it's pretty cold to be shipping eggs in your area.. remember, the box may sit overnight in a cold warehouse for all we know.. but if your gonna buy eggs to ship, BYC is an excellent place. I've bought many there, and never ever got ripped off.. even from the beginners!
But on the other hand, if you get some cheap eggs, it's possible they would survive.. and it's a really nice thing to be so considerate of your broody!!!
I'm up for a road trip! I think Bargain is from Ohio, will have to look again. There are so many amazing breeds of chickens it's hard to choose. I really need to get a few really good laying hens so I can keep my family in eggs. The rest, I just want a pretty egg basket and eye candy. Oh, and another coop....

Hmmm lets see, I got the Marans back in the Spring last year... I'll have to look back at the threads..... they were soooo ugly as little chicks when I bought them! there were six If I remmember right! A Hawk got two the first week then possum got anther later . I was left with one little cockeral and he "Studly" dissappeared 2 weeks ago , leaving me with two pullets.....er Hens now!

Just make sure the shells are not recognizable as eggs or they will be eating all your eggs.

Im getting a beautiful Maran egg from one of the girls every other day so far. Still waiting for Maran #2 to start laying.
The marans eggs are so pretty and worth the wait. My Marans only lay about 3, maybe 4 eggs a week. We have 22 day old Marans coming this spring (12 Black Copper, 10 Wheaten ) straight run. Hopefully there will be 8 girl's in there somewhere. I love a pretty egg basket!
A friend and neighbor keeps me in yard eggs from her R. Island Reds , and brought me 14 dozen last night . Some small from young hens but 1.00 dollar a dozen . there will be lots of quiche and souffle , and frozen for baking and scrambled .Some to share with my kid and his wife .
You can't beat that price with a stick!

Beautiful, Eufaula, just beautiful and very nice sized too, you must be so thrilled!! I love the Marans. I ordered 10 Wheaton Marans and 12 Black Copper Marans for spring. They aren't the most prolific layers but for a beautiful egg I'll settle for 3 to 4 a week.

These are from the two Wheaties, the other is from an EE'er. I have no idea how the Black Copper Maran eggs compare since I don't have any yet. One day soon I'm going to actually eat one of the eggs!
I have heard that hatchery Marans don't lay as dark. I can only vouch for hatchery Wellies where mine are from. They lay a tiny light brown egg, it zaps their mental energy too.

My EE I traded for has still not started laying yet. I don't know if she is a dud EE or just a plain old dud.
I traded 1 game hen and 2 game pullets today and got my 2 bantam hens back. LOL They were glad to be home and I was glad to see them back where they belonged. Gonna hatch some bantam chicks for the boys this summer. And my little bantam roo is too handsome not have any hens.
