Wow db, truly amazing and the answer is "never enough"! How far is Logees from you? You may have mentioned before but I don't remember. Your labels are great, you seem really organized despite many plants. Mine don't look as nice and I don't have as many plants! Sophia, Jim Wyrtzyn and Paper Snowflakes look great. I have Little Miss Mummy, got it from Taylor last fall but yours looks better. I love the dark leaves. Do I see an orchid in there too? Just took a class last weekend on orchid growing but that's another forum! Thanks for all of the pics, they are great and they have let me see varieties I haven't seen before...especially as I sit here tonight waiting for the "The Big Storm". What is with this winter!
Favorite Begonias
Logee's is about 3 hours from Amsterdam, but only 30 minutes from my son's college. So we drop the plants in his room and take him out to dinner.
The labels are a work in progress. I got a bunch of Eon markers from a co-op on cubits and my winter project is to label all the plants. Brugmansias are done, begonias are half done, and I have the information for the other 500 or so plants. 3 labels on each - Eon, white plastic and yellow tie. OCD at its finest. Or, I'm sick of my son losing labels when he moves the plants in and out of the greenhouse.
Did someone mention orchids? (Piping Rock Orchids is, amazingly, about 20 minutes from my house) Glenn is my orchid pusher. I can't be alone with him anymore.
If you act quickly, you can get 20% off Logee's website and have them hold the order for spring shipping. The sale ends tonight. The promo code is EMAIL20.

Ahhhhh!...Brugs...oh that's right, another forum. I will have to work on labeling this summer, I am so impressed with yours. How convenient that your son went to a college so close to Logee's, very kind son. Thanks for the tip on Logee's will check it now. Will also check Piping Rock tomorrow. Hoping to work from home tomorrow...big snow coming...we will see. I have heard mention of North Carolina Farm on this forum before. Are they still around? BTW, pictures from your greenhouse are making me crazy for spring. It's out there somewhere!
Butch-
They are my favorite. Rexes and tuberous don't flourish, the rhizos don't flower at the right time, but the canes do just fine. I was waiting for you to show up wih some pictures of your beauties.
Shifty-
As far as I know North Carolina is still around. I thought the begonia group I joined might do mass orders, but they don't seem to be interested. Oh well... I think I get into enough trouble on my own. They are going to Peace Tree in April, so I'm putting in an order. I think I'll look at the site tonight while we are buried in white.
At Logee's, I picked up B. Goegoensis. Any advice? Anyone?
B. goegoensis would do best in a terrarium if you can. Had it a couple of times and if it ever dries out, you can almost kiss it goodbye.
Some others that look a lot like it are some of the U numbers (334, 557, and one other one) plus B. phuthoensis - these I've been able to hold on to. B. 'George Fewkes' and 'Mumtaz' are darker varieties you might like too.
Here were two of my old B. goegoensis.
I love My Special Angel also. I've yet to see mine bloom and it grows pretty slowly. Glad to see your pic, Butch.
db, I envy your beautiful orcid collection.
Oh I hope I can get "My Special Angel" to bloom...I just ordered it from Logee's last night!
What great leaves on B.goegoensis, but I know my limits and I think it's best left to be grown by others on this forum!
What else did you order?
I also ordered Elaine, Paper Snowflake and Tea Rose. I had Tea Rose for a few years and it was always in flower but then, the winter I had PM, it bought the farm. I wanted to keep my order small so I can order from others as well. I have been looking at Lauray of Salisbury's website. Wish they had photos for those of us who are still figuring out whats what, (which was why I started this thread). I am sure that once I do my wish list will get longer and longer! I definitely want more canes! Thanks for the tip on the sale.
I have about 80% of Judy's canes. Let me know what you would like a picture of, and I'll see if I have it.
Here is my starting list based solely on descriptions and the fact that I couldn't choose them all:( a couple you have already posted, so I will leave those out), Black Gold, Silver Mist, Kristy, Fabulous Tom, Irene Nuss and Victoria Woods. I don't expect you to post photos of them all, that's too much work, but if you have any of the first 3 that would be great or if you have grown any of them and have a comment about them that would be good too. Thank you!
I have them all except Kristy. Black Gold is a baby. I will try to take pictures tomorrow. Butch has some of these too.
Wow, no, summer seems like another time far far away. The forecast for next week confirms it. Haven't had a winter like this in awhile. I think I need one of those lights you sit under!
Definitely like Silver Mist, Irene Nuss and not sure why Josephine is off topic ( it is fav's) but really like that too. Good growing tips too, thanks.
I have been cruising through Taylor's web site tonight and have decided I must have an illness. I have other plant "afflictions", however, I feel begonia taking a strong lead!!
What a view from the "Remember Summer" photo. Can you see that from a window in your home? It is lovely.
Josephine wasn't one of the begonias on your Lauray list. Hence the off topic.
I wrote to Taylor's to ask if they will have any other begonias not on the website. It may take a couple of months, but they usually get back to me.
Yes, the summer pix is the view out the back yard toward the other side of the valley. The school playing fields are behind our house, so there's no building to obstruct the view.
What else are you considering?
Great pics, thanks so much for doing it. I really appreciate it.
What is your opinion of Victoria Woods?? and Sweet Shirley? I love Black Gold.
The others from Lauray I was considering are: Mary Ann Flunker, May Queen, and Ann Anderson, ( Annie Laurie was one but you beat me to it)
I should try the shea butter lotion, my hands/nails are awful this winter.
You have given me some great pics, some of them I can't find on any of the mail order sites I know, but it gives me something to keep looking for.
Do you have any "non" canes, that may not be your favorites but you really like?
I forgot two...aconitifolia and salicifolia. The white flowers sounded interesting.
Victoria Woods isn't the fastest grower, but that could be because my little ones were terribly neglected this year. I have to look at Sweet Shirley - I always confuse it with Honeysuckle.
I have Mary Ann Flunker, May Queen, Ann Anderson, and salicifolia. I'll get pictures next weekend (in the light).
Non-canes. I love rexes, they don't love me. I have them in aquariums downstairs for the winter. It's futile, they will sit like little lumps all summer.
Others: Marmaduke, Cowardly Lion, Sizemoreae, Anaconda, Iron Cross (wish I could get more than one leaf), soli mutata, cathedral, Metallica (love, love, love this), Foliosa, Fuchsioides, Richmondensis, Tweedle Dee , Little Brother Montgomery , Black Fancy.
Butch - where are you with pictures of your favorites? You have lots more than I do.
