I need your help. I would like to by a bare root rose from David Austen and send it to my friend in Norfolk. The store told me that they start shipping roses on the end of this month, January, but that strikes me as being a bit too early. As they say, "It's hard sayin'; not knowin'" so I figured I'd ask some experts. Should I wait and have the roses sent later or do people around Norfolk actually start planting shrubs in early February?

Thanks for the help,
Karl

Most winters, yes, early February would be fine.

February 2010 was an exception, abnormally cold and lots of snow; whether next February will be as bad, too early to say, but unlikely.

Wow, I don't think I'd even be able to put a shovel in the ground in March much less plant a shrub in February. Good to know, Resin, and thanks for the help.

You think they would ship according to the hardiness zones. No way would I be able to plant roses in Feb here. What zone is Norfolk? 8? I can't tell from the hardiness zone map if it's 7b or 8a...Farmer's almanac says there's a 50% chance of last frost March 20

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Zone 8, except perhaps just into zone 9 on the coast. In early Feb., light frost is perfectly possible, but the soil is unlikely to be hard frozen.

The roses I sent should be arriving this weekend, thanks to your assurance, Resin. Having just finished shoveling the snow away from the sides of my greenhouses, most of which was over my head in depth, I know that I won't be planting anything outside for quite some time.

But back to the roses. It's got to be nice having not only a mild climate, but also such a long season. Plants there really have a very long time to settle in before winter. Such is the trade off for my choice to cling to the granite cliffs of the coast of Maine.

Anyway....thanks again!

Right now it is 8 or 9° in most of Norfolk, and getting milder in the next couple of days (11 to 12° forecast). Plenty of rain too. So planting will be easy!
