Sweeeeeet. I got 2 cc for $1 each at Wal-Mart the other day. No blooms but some dried blooms. One is a fushia and the other one a peachy color. Can't wait for them to bloom next!
Holiday Cacti General Discussion Part #2
Don't know it's name. Maybe Doc will see this and help. Thanks again, Doc.
Peaches and Cream has buds and will be flowering again soon.
JB - what type of fertilizer do you use on your holiday cactus?
Hi Carolyn, I use miracle grow liquid and I do not fertilize too often. Usually when I think they are growing and getting ready to bloom. Take pictures when the Pand C Blooms.
I have Yellow and Orange and Magenta blooming now. They never quit actually.
JB -
thanks
Carolyn, do you still want a hibuscus plant, or do you want cuttings? I have a note saying you wanted cuttings, but I was not sure if that was accurate. JB
JB
are cuttings easy to start for Hibiscus?
Not too difficult if you pay attention to them. I have ten I started last summer and 7 look good, they got watered when they were dry and they are growing. One has a bud. LOL
You need to know what is best for you.
Carolyn, What color Hibiscus do you have? Mine never rooted in the water, so I went ahead and planted them. We'll see how they do.
Patti
I don't remember. I know that JB was going to send me some cuttings. I remember thinking they were gorgeous...... I hate this - I don't remember anything any more!
JB ... would you repost the link you provided in the following post?
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=8284930
Thanks
MARY
Carolyn, I did not forget you. The salmon hibiscus will be sent in another week or two.
Mary, I can not open that link, please tell me the subject and I will try and find what you are talking about.
Hey you guys, I am so thrilled. JBsBirdsandMore was chosen by Garden Watchdog as one of their Top 5 for 2011. I want to thank you all for your support that help make that possible.
I still have not taken any Holiday cactus cuttings because they are still blooming. Here it is March and some are just getting buds. I have orders for yellow cuttings and can not get them because that plant is just as pretty today as it was Thanksgiving. LOL JB

JB - Congratulations!

Just got four beauties from Logee's yesterday. Put them in bigger pots and they look pretty good considering the weather they traveled in.
I got Schlumbergera 'Thor Carmen' - Bright red
" 'Christmas Flame' - Golden Yellow
" 'Cristen' - pink and white
" 'Thor Tenna' - lavendar and white
We will see if the colors are what they are to be. I understand the amount of sun will determine how deep (pure) the colors are on the blooms. I usually keep my stock plants in a South Window and I moved some of them after the holidays to an inner area that gets
morning sun and not much of it. I see nothing different in the colors brightness or deepness. (Maybe that is not the word. I am having a senior moment. Sorry) . Anyhow, I am thinking outloud at the moment. I need to pay more attention to these blooms and see if I see any difference.
For those of you on the West Coast, stay safe.
JB .... you may find the following link useful

MARY
Mary, that is a wonderful link. I printed it out and want to read every word. Wow....how you find all this good stuff. You are super. Thanks so much. Hugs. JB
JB .... LOL ..... I stumbled across that link by accident .... after briefly perusing it I said to myself ....WOW .... and bet JB would like all this info in one doc.
By the way ... I'm curious ... How were the plants you ordered from Direct Gardening?
MARY
Mary, I do not remember what I ordered. I only got my plants from Logee so far. I wonder what I ordered. Was that the pink pussywillow? JB
no three holiday cacti
No, they did not come yet. Hmmmmm Wonder when they will send them. I misplaced the order. Darn it Thanks for reminding me. LOL JB
very nice so it is blooming now?
Yes because I have it in a window where it gets some sun because it is a new plant and I want the roots to grow and get strong. It is confused. LOL
The three cactus I got from Direct Gardening are really nice looking starter plants. One is an Easter Cactus. They arrived yesterday and I left them warm up overnight and they seem fine now. They were cold and the box had holes in it for breathing , but it just made them colder. lol......anyhow, they seem to be fine today and are in nice new clean soil sitting in the sunny window. I want to really get them going before I move them to the East window. That will only take a week or two.
Someone said they were not always happy with Direct Gardening and I just wanted to say my plants were fine and worth the money. Have a good day. JB
Sounds promising!
My little CC's bloomed again this month... my biggest christmas cactus, which got repotted into a larger hanging planter last year, didn't bloom at all this winter, but I'm wondering if it might put on a show at Easter. LOL
I just noticed my daughter's is in bud again. She has not moved hers yet either. They will keep blooming if they are happy and in enough light. lol....
Good luck at Easter.
Gita, those cuttings you sent me are doing fabulous! They are putting on new growth, so am sure they are rooted and will be big gorgeous plants before long! Thanks again!!
Gita, I just noticed the little cuttings you sent me are starting to take hold. I did loose a couple, but the others are doing just fine. I am so grateful to you for sending them.
BTW, we need to put up a 600 ft. chain link fence. Does that ever go on sale at HD? lol
I get a Military discount but I thought if there is a sale I may be able to save more.
Do I owe you any cuttings? If so please let me know. I have missed talking to you. I am really busy and orders are coming in but weather is not cooperating to ship. I have only shipped one time since December and that was one week when the temperatures were above freezing at night time for about three days in March. lol. Later. JB
JB---
NO! You do not owe me anything!!! I live to share--just for the pleasure of sharing....
Glad my CC cuttings are doing OK. You DO have the Greenhouse! That helps!
All my CC cuttings are sitting in small pots on the mid-sash of my windows,
YES! It is COLD there---but I have nowhere else to put them....The do not seem to mind....
From all the # of small cuttings I potted up--I have lost maybe 4.
NOW--Since I potted up 2-3 cuttings per small pot--some of them have not made it...
I know I have removed about 4 pots all together---dead!
Since most of my CC are always semi-dessicated---I am glad to see the rest of them rooting.
Besides--it is VERY cold on those window-sashes--yet they do root....
Re the Chain Link Fence---NOPE!!!! It never goes on sale!!! Few things ever seldom do!
Don't waste your time waiting for sales at HD--it never happens....Go somewhere else....
You can try 84 Lumber--or other Gardening Supply places....
Not saying they will be any cheaper!!! HD prices are pretty good!
Gita
Thank you Gita for the information.
My babies are in the house, I did not trust them in the GH over that bad weather. I did not want anything to happen to them. I am such an old worry wart with the tiny ones.
Hope you have a delightful Spring. JB
JB--I would LOVE to have a delightful spring--IF it ever came!!!
Tired of these barely above freezing temperatures....Remember--I have to be out
in Garden watering plants no matter how cold it gets...YUKKKK!
Enough is enough!!! Tomorrow is April 1st! Hope Mother nature
will not be playing any tricks on us!!!
From the weather forecast---we should have spring-like temps. middle of next week....
YEAHHH!!!
It better!!! I have company coming from Alaska--NJ--and NC....(4 people)
that will stay here at my house for 3-5 days...I DO have the room!
What a mix!!!!! To some it will feel freezing (NC)--and to some it may feel like spring---
(my Sis from AK)...My other Sis from NJ ---is will be pretty much the same as here.....
Trying to finish cleaning up my house and bathrooms for next week....
TWO areas to go!!! Kitchen and bathroom.....I think I will be OK.
THEN--planning to make some good food for them...to have while they visit here...
My Tomato and Shrimp Cream soup------My Chili----Some Hot Crab Dip for the first night they
arrive here...with Stacy's Pita Chips...
Definitely---we will be going out to a great Seafood/Crab place for dinner--as all of them
are old MD residents and have been craving Steamed Crabs forever....
Besides--the reason they all are here is for a 50th reunion of their Nursing School days.
NOT my sister form NJ--and NOT my friends's husband from NC. Bur I an sure HE will go too.
Too bad I still have to work my 3 days while they are here....Such is life!!!!
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Sundays---8-5....
THEN--I have to just remind myself that they are NOT here to see me!
I am, simply a B&B for them....However--we re all old friends--and also family....
The saying "Mi Casa--Su Casa" will sure apply....I like company that can "feel like home"
and just help themselves....Of course--my 2 sisters will be able to fill in for me royally!
Still trying to finish cleaning everything......Just taking a DG break here.....
Gita
On the chain link fence, when we bought this house, we knew we needed to fence part of our yard, and couldn't afford the wooden fence I wanted, and city regs are that we had to put up something that traffic could see through, as we are on a corner. We had about 1200 feet to do, I think, and there was a farm/ranch auction coming up that had some listed. The owners had bought it all several years earlier, and never installed it, so they had about 1500 feet, posts, fittings, gates, rails, etc. I think I paid about $400 for the whole lot. We still had to purchase some fittings, some top cats, and 1 walk thru gate and a drive thru gate, but it was a great deal. Then when we were all done and installed, I sold the leftover mesh and stuff for $250, so figure I came out great. Anyway, if you have any kind of things like that in your area, be sure and read all the auction listings, just in case. Also, keep an eye on the want ads in your local paper, as sometimes you can find it there cheap too!
Wow, sounds like you're going to have a great time with your company, Gita! And it's nice to know you like company! Never know, some of us might just drop in on you sometime too, lol!
Wow, Gita, your company is going to love that food. I remember when we had our houseboat at Trojan Harbor, Md. We would go to Gablers (not sure how to spell it) for crabs all the time. I love those Maryland Crabs. LOL
Have a great day and hopefully the snow we just had will not be going South . It is clearing up now. Some April 1st. BLAH!
At my favorite local (1.2 miles away) I purchased 2 Sunrise (Easter) cacti.
Will try to post pictures tomorrow.
Oh Merry, how great is that. Can not wait to see pictures. Have a good day.
Hey Gita. JB and holiday cactus lovers, just came across this thread in Mid Atlantic forum. Seems Porsha (pprice) is in need of some plants to fuss over and grow as she had to leave her collection and garden behind in a relocation move. Looking over her outdated trade lists I see she likes holiday cactus and other type plants. Maybe some of you will check it out and send her some cuttings of your beauties! Here is her thread http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1170206/
And yes she does live in Indiana!
Happy May Day all you lovely people. Today, being May Day you would think all the Holiday Cactus would have bloomed and are about to rest for awhile. That is just not so. This morning my baby Easter Cactus bloomed its very first bloom. It is hardly big enough to transplant at this time, yet it bloomed and has another bud. I am so excited about it I had to share it with you all. Have a wonderful day. JB
JB--Too cute!!!
My Easter cactus pot--buried among too many other plants on the small shelf along
the LR window--seems to have had some blooms. Now the remnants just hang there...
Normally, at this time, most of my plants would be outside already. NOT this Spring!
Just the last 2 nights--the temps have been in the very low 40's. Days--in 70's.
WHAT is one to do?????
Seems I am quite behind this spring on many things.....I do not like that!
had company for a week. Now the bed being built--all requires my attention. And time---
I am now spending the better part of my shift in garden at work. Watering....doing my Clinics..etc..
My foot hurts and I do not feel like doing anything else when I get home....
Some of my baby X-Mas cactus have died off--as I am negligent about keeping them uniformly
moist. It is feast--or famine....Then they croak!
Today, at work, I "cleaned up" all the trays from broken off pieces of the pots of
"Stonecrop Angelina"--a very interesting color of a "succulent" that almost looks like
Burros Tail--just much softer. The color? Yellowish-greenish----Interesting...
Potted up all the broken pieces in small pots. Hope they root. Will have some for the Plant Swap then...
Spring sure is dragging this year!!!! Gita
I agree Gita. Mine are still in the house too. We are suppose to have 40's the next 2 nights. Was on 44 today, excuse me 45. This is ridiculous for Oklahoma May 1st. I stand by my rule not to do anything until after May Day! The weather this morning said our latest freeze was May 2, 1909, but we have had low temps that my plants would not handle after being in the warm house.
