Maybe goosefoot (Chaenopodium) lol
no really-- ivy geranium.
Hanging in there Part 6
I have a lot of hen's & chicks Gita just got a bunch of new ones I had thought of that as a possibility, but I want something that will be a bit taller. I have two trays of these. If anyone is interested North Hills Nursery is having a two for one sale and she also sent extras as well. http://www.northhillsnursery.com/SpecialOffer.html
Holly! OMG! It's beautiful!! I would plant something calm and demure to set off the swan more than the swan setting off the plants. I am so impressed! Who does the bird collection in the case belong to?
Chris, I decided to imagine my root sticking out is an alligator, LOL!
Nice idea on the planter :o)
Gita, hens and chicks would be interesting.
Giggling over the goosefoot :o)
Holly, I've never seen so many different colors of H&C. beautiful!
A fern or begonias or rose shaped impatiens might look neat.
Small wing begonias- Jill had a nice on,e that I loved and lost LOL
Billy, That is my John Perry collection. Mostly sea life and shore birds. I display it with treasures from the sea that were mostly collected from from my beach adventures. There are just a couple of purchased shells on the shelf the rest I have collected. Like the big conch shell in the upper right hand corner. I picked it up from about 8ft depth while snorkeling on our first Bahama trip. The Conch was still in it and to be legal for harvesting it must have a fluted edge to the shell which mine does. We took it back to our apt and cooked the shell and Ric ate the Conch.
Holly, I enjoyed looking at your collection, like the Orca. Never has Conch, ate alligator, pretty good if you get the white meat.
2 down 4 more to good, now back to pampering myself. Watching for side effects. More scans scheduled in a few weeks to see if things are changing for the better.
It was a nice day, I did get outside a little while before we had to leave. I have snowdrops ready to bloom, but more cold temp and snow this weekend. I have had some concerns about my water garden, with the long period of be-low freezing temps and the snow not melting it was had to see if the pump was still running, yesterday it was warm enough to melt the snow away and I saw water running so that was good. Today I could look in the water, not so good, I spotted one fish that did not make it and possibly 2 frogs. They are not floating yet as the water is to cold for that, but frogs usually bury themselves in the muck and you don't see them. Hopefully it is just the 2, and the others are safe.
Very windy last night! The fire siren was set off last night, blew a long time. It woke me up but it was not the tornado warning. So I went back to sleep. When DH gets home from work I'll find out if it was a fire or a motor vehicle accident. Ambulance calls are sent out over the scanners and pagers, this cuts down on the siren waking up the whole town. Ambulance calls out number the other calls.
It is trying to snow this morning, reminding us that winter is still here.
I have to order more seed starting mix today as my free shipping is about to expire. I think I have one bag to get me started. I have to get my petunias and germaniums started.
Sallyg, I also want to start some lettuce and greens. My own plants will be safer for me to eat then the ones in the grocery store. I was waiting till I had to turn on the grow lights when I had more seeds to start.
Hi Chris! Glad to see you posting, that you were able to go back to sleep after the siren too. I hope this round goes OK re the side effects. Poor froggies.
: ^(
It was crazy windy here today too. I braved it awhile . mostly on the south side of the house while cleaning my van and a little tidying in the daylilies. I was glad to come in out of it though.
I have sprouts in one of the two types of lettuce, and some eensy weensy coleus sprouts!
Holly, how BEAUTIFUL it all is! Those are real treasures and I'd be proud to own any of them. Soooo cool that you found the conch! I don't think I could have eaten it tho, LOL! I am so floored yet calmed, looking at it! Very beautiful and priceless! Thanks for sharing!
Chris, the count down continues!
Awww for the fish and frogs. I wonder if the frogs came out too soon and froze. Dang it for all of them :o(
Now, you guys are having wind and I'm not. Last time I had wind everyone east did too. Heck, it seemed like the entire state was windy. It's funny how similar our weather is even tho we are on different lat.'s and long.'s.
This morning I woke to thunder! It's raining lightly now. I couldn't be happier.
I'm slowly getting over the sinus. One Grandchild was coughing all over the place, so I wasn't to unhappy to take him home, LOL! We kept them two nights anyway.
My tomato seed came, so the garden is complete. I just need Spring now.
Sun is out again today. We are heading for a warm up, rain tomarrow, then back into snow later in the week.
I am starting to feel better after a down day on Monday, I just was so tired that I cound not get comfortable, so I went to bed at 8:30 and went to sleep, woke up a little at 11:30 and back to sleep till 7 in the morning. I just don't do things like that unless something is really up.
I am dogless today, DH took them to the groomers this morning and will get them after work.
Billy, I read on another thread you are not feeling well, caught it from the grandchild. I hope you are starting to feel better.
Sally, how are your sprouts doing? I might start some seeds in a day or so, depending on how I feel.
Good morning Chris! I'm glad you're feeling enough pep to post! It sounds the same as here sort of- today is bright and chilly but not windy, tomorrow rain moves in later, after that I don't know but not looking warm at all.
My one kind of lettuce is going well- except that one cell I might have forgotten to put seeds in it ! haha. The other lettuce was older but there are a couple tiny struggling sprouts. There are a few cotton showing their bent stems, s l o w l y emerging. Chives and parsley are old or ? and looking like duds. I've heard parsley seed does not last long. Oh yes some tiny coleus emerging!
I bet you miss the dogs. Even though Addy annoys me at times, she follows me everywhere in the house all day long it seems, it's so odd when DH takes her out and I don't have that 'shadow' to watch out for. The kids like it when she gets washed at the kennel and comes home smelling pretty.
Sally, seed babies are looking good. I too have missed putting seeds in a cell, you keep looking and looking and nothing. LOL
There are seeds that need to be fresh to grow, parsnips are one, and I think parsley is in that family. Once you get it established you can harvest from the same plant for a few years, just don't let it all go to seed. It seems that letting it go to seed kills off the plant. I have had parsley survive in my zone and it stays green under the snow.
Actually it is nice having a break away from the girls, I don't have to get up to let them out, and sometimes they get a bit growley with one another, jealous if one invades the other's space beside me. Just like 2 kids, "Mommy likes me best"
Funny fur girls! Yes for all their cute, its nice to have one less thing to tend to at times.
I didn't know that I could make parsley last another year- Thanks for the tip.
Hi Chris, Hope you are feeling better and stronger. I haven't started any seeds yet. I have my plugs coming the beginning of April. Still haven't found my box of seeds. I had them on the shelf that got moved into the mud/utility room. I took everything off that shelf before I moved it and I remember thinking where should I put these seeds. Really they should either be still in the bedroom or upstairs in the plant room. I just can't believe that I can't find them.
I am NOT at all ready for planting seeds yet---It just seems too early!
Mid March for most of them......
Besides--my light set-up is still on for all the Coleus cuttings.
What a rude awakening it will be for the two people I have been growing
these cuttings for!!! HA! It will be--like--Here is a full sized tray of huge cuttings
for you! Now YOU take care of them!!! Make sure you give them good light and
water them at least twice a week---for the next 2 months!
OH, well! They will have to deal with it! One of them is my Manager. That scares me!
The other is a gardening person--I know she will do OK. No problem!
Gita
You might suggest to your manager that he pot up all those coleus cuttings in several hanging baskets, if he has a good (sunny) place for them that way... if the cuttings are a good size, I think they'd do better tucked into several larger containers at this point... I've done that, and then in late April I pinch off cuttings again to start still more little plants. :-)
I don't have any inside seeds started yet, but I should try to sow a few this week.. too much other stuff going on! I'm getting some things ready for Saturday's party, and I'm putting in some new cabinets in the kitchen. What timing, huh?
Sally, I like the flat leaf parsley, easy to inspect for dirt and bugs then the curly leaf one. My favorite use is in macaroni salad.
Holly, I have put things away where I can find it later....What a Joke! The best way to find it is quit looking for it. Seems to work every time.
Jill, that is a good sugestion on the coleus, maybe even a combination pot of different colors. Keep pinching and transfer the pot outside for summer. Gita, may have to do the pot for her Manager, just take him into the garden section pick out a nice pot or 2 and have him buy the pots and potting soil.
I ordered Giant Exibition Coleus seeds, they are a good mix, lots of colors and large leaves. Fun to see what you get, and easy to grow.
Oh I am doing the Happy Dance all over the house and it is all because of my sweetie Ric. He is definitely on the good boy list. He found my seeds. I knew they had to be in either room but I had really checked every where for them. Ric said he would find them and he did. They were in the upstairs plant room on top of a stack of things that I had stacked under a table. They were at the top and pushed back so when I looked under the table I never saw them. As soon as he said where he found them I remembered putting them there. The only dissapointing thing is the Ornamental Pepper Seeds I picked up while on vacation in Fl. were not in the box. They must be somewhere else with brochures and things I brought home from Fl. I have been working at de-cluttering so there is hope I will find them as well.
I guess I kept running out of time to finish threads. I thought I had been here, and yes, I have been down.
Chris, I finally went to the Dr. on Friday, because Thursday night I actually started to feel sick. I just had the headache before and couldn't get rid of it, but thought I was still fighting everything off.
I have sinus AND bronchiatis. Yep, no fighting that off with fruit! She gave me Prednesone with a pennicilin and what a difference that made in stopping the coughing. I see why athletes find nothing wrong with steroids. I don't intend to live my life on them tho!
At least my head is clear and I can think. It just gets hard to read thru long posts, so I will scan and skip to the bottom. I'm so behind everywhere.
Jill, I feel bad that I haven't had time to even get over to your site. I sure got sick and busy with kids at the wrong time.
Chris I will be thinking of you at the seed swap today and we will take some pics so you can feel like you were there as well.
Billy I sure wish you lived closer how nice it would be to see you at the swaps.
have a great time guys!!
Holly, thanks, it would be nice to see you too! Seed swaps sure are a great way to trade seeds without losing any money on the big packet you only needed a few seeds from!
billy- yay, you feeling better!
ladyg--guess you've had a week of extra rest. We all hope you'll be perking up soon too.
Group hugs for Chris !!
Hope you alll had a great seed swap today!
As great as we could, considering missing you lovelies that are too far to come there, Chris, Jen, Sally(IA), Allison...
Might be a good assortment of movies on TV this week, leading up to Oscars. Chris, maybe you'll find something to help pass some rest time. I think I saw African Queen in a promo? One of my favorites.
I agree with Sally it was a great time but we sure did miss those of you that are too far away to come.
Yes, the African Queen is a great movie!! It's been too long since I've seen it. DH is a great one for the Turner Classic Movies, but he hasn't watched it lately that I know of.
The lily is soooo beautiful!!
I am trying to once again to deep clean the bedroom. I just did it last week when I thought I was over this mess. Holly, I had so much dust already, that I'm afraid to peek under the bed in my weakened state, LOL!
Sallyg, Holly, I hope you found some neat seeds!
I need to check my Columbines on the porch. Did I mention I took them outside and piled snow on them. By that afternoon, back on the screened in but not heated porch, it had all melted. I might have to try it again just to simulate another winter .
Chris, thoughts of strength coming to you on Prednesone wings. Don't let them crash into you. They're pretty powerful, LOL!
I got several types of Ornamental Peppers, I just love Ornamental Peppers. Also a few other seeds but really we were there more for the fun than the seeds.
It was so nice to get out in the yard today without being all bundled up. I moved a big hosta, moved the purple cone flower, trimmed the hydrangea tree, picked up a lot of broken branches and planted some primrose. It's so nice to get out in the garden!
Oh how nice that sounds. Our yard is way too wet to do much.
Us coastal people with more sand based soil, have the advantage at the moment.
I cleaned up in the veggie bed, knocked down a small compost and shoveled some soil over it. Hoping the leaves break down enough for whatever I go to plant there later. Started clearing an area for early planting of greens, then lost focus and ended up leaving some oethr things there temporarily while I cleared in the raspberries.
All in all tho, a nice day, and am trying to get my 'early' stuff planted by 3-15 at the latest becasue peas, radishes etc always seem to bolt and I thinking I have dawdled on them.
Holly, I have been tempted to do the ornamental peppers, but like everything else, have no room because of limited sun. They do look so pretty in people's beds tho and I don't think anyone in my town has ever had them.
Coleouslover, it kills me to read of people actually being able to dig a hole in their yard, LOL! Even when we were in the 40's a few weeks ago, the ground was still frozen solid.
Sallyg, raspberries sound so good right now. My neighbor has a huge patch and when I water for her I always get a few ripe ones to nibble on as I walk her flower beds.
I can get peas out by mid April and spinich, radish, etc. at the end. I think they get the best rains then and aren't so harsh in taste.
Flowajen, sigh... just beautiful!
Jen, what a pretty little flower to say "spring is on it's way" .
It was a nice day yesterday here to. Didn't get out, not quit ready for that. Last night it rained, thunder and lightening. People are calling all the fire departments in the area to pump out their basements. Many reporting 3 to 4 foot of water. Not a good thing to wake up to.
Sally what verity of peas are you planting? I hope to get in my sugar snaps around St. Patty's day, but that will depend on the weather. If DH is home that Saturday I may have to "press him into service". I need to attach new chicken wire to my pea supports, as the old wire is getting very rusty.
Coleuslover, sounds like you had a wonderful day in the outdoors, you got a lot done. Good for you.
I am going to try a sweet pepper this year called Orangesicle. I grow a few plants and pop them in my flower beds. They seem to grow better there in the vegatable garden, and they look pretty when the peppers begin to change color.
Billy, hoping you are feeling better each day. Finding myself going to bed earlier then I usually do, but that's a good thing.
Chris, this year I went with Caseload from Johnny's Select Seed. I've never had them before. I think the ones we liked best so far were called Eclipse and if these aren't up to par, will go back to them. I do like to try varieties and like many peas in the pod if I'm going to shell. I also sit on the front porch in a chair to shell too. It seems so natural to do so :o)
I'm trying an orange pepper called Gourmet :o) I too think the colored peppers look and do better in the flower beds. They are gorgeous color there aren't they?
I am so much better today! I did finish the bedroom yesterday after I found a dust bunnie had rolled down the hall to the bathroom, LOL! Today, shortly, I am dusting the big room with all the bookshelves. I have to get everyone's germs all picked up! The sun is out and it's at least going to be a mood lifter after all the months of cloud and hazy days we have had.
Chris, I'm back to my regular 8:00 bedtime and it feels good to go to bed and not lay in it all day. I have to say it felt good to lay when I didn't fel good tho, LOL!
I'm ready to get the kids this week-end and I'm sure DD is ready for me too!
Have a wonderful day everyone!
Good morning! Rain overnight here too, and we may get storms today. They say it'll be gusty, sounds like our daily "front moving through" LOL At the moment it is mild and sunny just beautiful!
See? If Lady plants peas mid March I should be getting mine in NOW! This year I'm planting Golden sugar pod peas from Pinetree. I agree if you're shelling peas go for the most per pod, AND that pea shelling almost has to occur outside with proper ambiance.
I don't have a long pea season so I tend to use branches like Buddleia branches, as pea fence.
Sallyg do you think Buddleia branches are enough? I looked up your peas and they get 6 feet long. That's a lot of vine.
LOL- 'look up info, before proceeding"- what a concept. I better go reinforce my newly inserted 4 feet of Buddlia branches, with some longer end poles and twine. I don't think of peas getting that tall with the number of times they have fried in mid May anyway. Thanks for the heads up
; ^)
Sallyg just wanted to save you the OMG moment. LOL Your reinforcement plan sounds good. : )
