We're supposed to get a big snow storm today through tomorrow. I got up early and cleaned part of the coop, just under the roost. The DL method is working well but I just wanted to clean it anyway. The roosts were dusted with Sevin. The Girl's were so excited to have 2 new bales of shavings on the floor and in the nest boxes too. The heat lamps got cleaned and dusted. I filled the sand fluff box with new sand - it sits outside of the coop, so all the Girl's got a good rolling and fluff in the sand. The feeder is over flowing, fresh water, they had warm oatmeal for breakfast and I threw a bunch of Kale on the coop floor for them to pick at today. The dogs had a long walk this morning too. They are all happy and we're ready if we happen to get snowed in. Looking out the window it's just beautiful, big fat snow flakes covering up all the trees and brown grass. Beautiful! Hope all of you in the path of the snow stay safe & warm.
Ready for the snow
Where the heck do you live to have brown grass.
Then Sunday night or I should say Monday around 7:00 It came came and came! The snow wouldnt have been so bad and the temps were not too cold, but the Sleet started right away and iced everything over!
the Chicks refused to even step out on it!
Yep.... Ive been getting the"old Georgia Snow Day jokes ever since"!
Its pretty bad here since the ice is fozen solid now and makes driving almost impossible!
Country Gardens, I live in Ohio. It's really the weeds and field grass that is brown, dormant maybe? All the perennials that weren't cute down are brown too. The trees are bare and brown & gray looking. This time of year isn't my favorite, no color, nothing lush, green and growing and no pretty colors. How many days until spring?
Eufaula, ice under the snow makes for very interesting driving! Stay safe and warm! My chickens finally braved the snow and walked around in it for a while. I guess they got bored with the coop.
We've got brown grass. Isn't that normal for winter?
Just that she is zone 5 & I thought all the lower zones are snow covered this winter. Our grass is under 55.4" of snow. That is the snowfall so far since November. Probably about 30" left. We did get a little melting one day.
The snow is to deep & it's to cold to let chickens outside. They are very happy in their warm coop.
With 55.4 " of snow on the ground your grass could be purple and you wouldn't know it LOL. That's a LOT of snow, bet you have never ending shoveling. Do you have to clean it off the roof of your house too? Compared to last year - we really got hammered - there really haven't had much snow so far, a couple of inches at a time, easy stuff to deal with. Knock on wood!
We took a little off one day then the temp went up to 40º for day & that cleaned the roofs. Only day above freezing since November.
I`m in northern maine and we NEED SNOW,the dog sled races had to be canceled no snow for the trails, the motels and resturants are empty, always full this time of year from all the snow sleders. Both of these events are huge to our econamy here, our fields are bare with spots of snow on them.I like it because its a lot less work for me as far as keeping the runs open for the girls
Yikes! Walked on pure Ice today! The snow froze over with the small amount of rain and it turned into an ice field! Its the first time in my life i actually walked on ice running cracks in front of me.... scary .. even knowing that the ground was just beneath! It reminded me of a lot of those scary fall through the ice scenes in movies!!! This Georgia girl just does not like it!
Hmmmm, I heard those Georgia peaches were really tough...We have been below freezing for about two weeks now and last night we got six inches thereabouts, and this morning it is raining ice...My girls are not very happy about being cabin bound for so long. This year so far has not been bad for snow but it has been from sub zero to about twenty degrees for all of December and Jan so far. Sunshine anybody???Hay
Just when I'm thinking it is nasty and cold here I read posts from you folks and feel silly bemoaning 26 and frozen water troughs!
Well twenty six is pretty darn cold for down there my dear. Anytime the water troughs freeze you have every right to bemoan. Go right ahead, I'm up early and listening...LOL...
Annie darling I just want you to know I love brown, it's just fine to have brown grass, it's a very warm color...If your not liking it just let me know and I'll send more snow your way...Don'tca just love winter...
PP I'm with you. I don't do cold very well and the geese certainly don't like their pond iced over.
Thankfully we only got a couple of lite sprinkles of sleet
If you like ice, come up here & I'll give you a ride in a pickup on a lake.
That's a popular activity here, fishing through the ice. People have fish houses to sit in & stay warm. Some are fancier than the house they live in.
I built my first one when I was 10 years old. Hooked it behind dads tractor & pulled it down & unto the lake.
Things were different then, no TV or video games. Just hard work & make your own fun!
Hay, we've got plenty of snow now LOL. It's windy on top of the hill so some of the drifts are almost to the top of the dogs backs!
Ice fishing in a little warm house sounds great, we love to go fishing. My husband goes to Rainy Lake a couple times a year to fish and he loves it there.
Anything to do with ice leave me cold (pun intended). No thanks!
Well, wouldnt you just know it! Ive been preparing for the cold for almost two weeks now. Got everything covered and water stored! Even filled the bathtub for toilet flushing if needed!
Ive been hibernating inside and enjoying my knitting and reading while housebound for 3 snowdays. My Chickens have been getting special attention every morning with fresh warmed water and boiled eggs added to their feed ( upped grain to keep them warm).
All was well until I got an emergency call out yesterday , Family burned out of their home and needed shelter at local motel. Also needed to check on Outreach Pantry to see if we had enough food left for Our monthly distribution. After skidding my Truck ( not four wheel drive) out of the driveway and onto pavement (thank Heavens for County road workers and their Salt trucks) getting to work was no problem!
After all was done........I strted having stomach cramps and started having chills.... You guessed it... viral stomach attack! I got myself home and just couldnt get warm. Decided the best thing to do was HOT shower and get to bed! I did and it was only 3:00.
Doing so helped a lot ...but I forgot to refill the tub with water and drip the faucets...wouldnt you know it ...water lines are now frozen solid!! Oh well, I guess I will just have to wait it out! ( Smelly toilet behind closed doors) At least I have electricity and Heat . Oh and I feel much better today ... just not eating anything!!
No good deed ever goes unpunished?
Enough with winter and cold and snow already. I want Spring!
The cold weather has finally got to us,-4 this morning and 22 in the silkie coop and 21 in the big girl coop.Heat lamp in silkie coop or it would be colder than that.
It is raining here. Rained yesterday too after about two inches of snow which made a real sloppy mess. Had to get it off the front steps and walkway yesterday before it all froze. Fortunatly the rain today made it all go away.
We got a few inches of snow which will help the trails for the snowmobilers
More snow! Schools were closed early today. I am soooo ready for spring it's not funny!
OH ANNIE: Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...in Ohio that is...LOL...Hay
Today was a spring day here... Not that it's such a great thing, cause stuff will start to grow only to get frozen! Weird.. but it was beautiful and I took full advantage of the first sunny day we've had for weeks. The fog has been hanging around for quite a while, just such a drag!
It was spring-like here this morning, but back to winter now. A front came through around noon bringing strong cold north winds. The dogs and horses were delighted, the cows and chickens didn't seem to notice. I hate cold!
More snow for us today. The girls are in the unheated garage with lots of hay and fresh water and food. They don't seem to mind that much especially when they see that white cold stuff out there. Last total snowfall estimate I'd heard for our region was approx. 43", with another 5-9" due today. I really can't think too much of spring at this point...
:)
Schools closed today, snow is on its way,and REALLY COLD starting tomorow down to 24 below 0 tomorow night with high winds, will hook extra heat lamp for big girls coop and a bigger bulb in silkie coop. Will have to cover all ventillation when the wind starts if its that cold.
Ugggggh!
LOL - winter in New England - takes a strong constitution to stay here!
Tamberlin, and Green: Your my heros. 24 below Mmmm Thats not cold thats just another planet. Your either my heros or your just two of those wild women...LOL...Hay
-22º as I type.
No wind, so not to bad.
Woke to find shop was cool. Furnace not running. Son is going to check up on it.
If it is out of fuel, we are going with electric heat. Fuel oil is just to expensive.
I always thought that electric heat was the most expensive of all (?)
I used to live in New England. I would not like to go back!
I'm about ready to move to warmer climes for oh, Feb-March. April is ok, we start to see some green things then. i have no idea where all this snow is going to go! We are not as cold as Maine, fortunately.
My dog loves it though so, I guess we'll stay for a while. My DH, though, grew up in Louisiana, so he REALLY doesn't like the snow!
I couldn't do it.. I am just too spoiled.. but years of never having to deal with snow or ice just makes it hard for a person to tolerate.. Maby a few years ago, but not now for sure.. LOL
BRRRRRRRR we're having a heat wave compared to 24 below zero. High winds should drop that to about minus 50! It's only 10 degrees here..... guess I'll get the suntan lotion out.
ZZ's I was born in California, the sun is still in my bones even though I'm in Ohio. BRRRRRR!
Spa Day. I had to wash 3 chicken butts early this morning. They weren't happy but were very well behaved. The had what looked like pasty butt. After being washed I put them in a wire crate in the heated garage and put a heat lamp on them until they were dry and gradually kept moving the lamp farther away until they got used to the cooler temps. They went back in the coop tonight - there are 2 heat lamps in there, not warm by any means, just above freezing. This is the only place I can say out loud that I washed chicken butts and no one will try to have me committed LOL.
BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR 40 TO 50 BELOW 0 WIND CHILL TONIGHT AND LOWER TOMORROW NIGHT,SAYING -24 SUNDAY NIGH WITH HIGH WINDS
