Help with tree

Dayton, OH

I have a Blue spruce that had a lot of it's needles fall off, more than ever before. I really didn't a chance to check out the tree very much because after the needles fell off, winter came in fast here, and with about 3 or 4 inches of snow. I don't go outside very much in the winter.

Doesn't sound good, probably a fungal disease or spider mite infestation picked up during the summer - Blue Spruces can't cope well with the summer heat / humidity combination you get in Ohio, but it takes months for the symptoms to show.

If you didn't provide extra and regular water through the horrible drought this area has had since July, it may very well have gone under. Many evergreens didn't make it with the rainfall deficit of over 15" for this past year. Being conifers, they didn't show much stress until too late, then turned brown. If your blue spruce has gotten browner looking overall since winter set in, I wouldn't bet on it surviving.

Resin: Actually, Blue Spruces do remarkably well here in the Midwest. Farther south, perhaps not as well, but north of the Ohio River, they thrive. We don't have much success with most firs, except for A. concolor here in the Ohio River Valley, but even they do fine farther north.

Look for sap accumulating on the underside of lower branches. Sign of phytophera. If that is your problem, remove affected branches and apply powdered lime under the branch spread.
