Can anyone help in identifying this caterpillar? The picture was taken in a wooded area in Staten Island New York during the summer.
Thanks in advance :)
CLOSED: Can anyone help in identifying this caterpillar?
This is a so-called 'yellow bear' caterpillar (Spilosoma virginica). It is in the subfamily Arctiinae (tiger moths) of the moth family Erebidae; tiger moths formerly were in a family of their own, Arctiidae. This species can appear in a wide range of colors as caterpillars - see http://tinyurl.com/26dfcey for a couple of examples.
Thank you so much for your help :)
