maybe a potato beetle of some kind?

Sinks Grove, WV

This is indeed a lady beetle; it is an introduced species (Harmonia axyridis) known as the Asian multi-colored lady beetle. These come in such a wide variety of color patterns, that one easily could think that several different species were involved - see http://tinyurl.com/2f3e6tq for a small sampling. They have made pests of themselves in some parts of the country for their habit of entering buildings during the autumn in search of winter shelter.
