Tropical Garden #88 - January 2011

Rita, I can't single out one picture you showed that I like the best because I like them all. I have to say though, that is one nice bunch of Anthurium blooms and I am looking forward to some of mine maturing enough to give me that many all at once.

ilovejesus99, welcome, and that is a real pretty Crown of Thorns plant you have. Show us some more pictures anytime you would like.

Thank you, I will have to keep my eye on it. How long do they bloom? Is this the normal bloom time?

Blackshear, GA

Oh wow, I just enlarged your pic above. Is that a dutchmans pipe? Do you think you could root a piece of that? That is just beautiful!!

ilovejesus99: Very nice Crown of Thorns, such pretty flowers!

Rachel: Thank you for your kind offer but I'm really trying to be good and continue to downsize. I did real good last year when it came to buying/acquiring new plants and I'm hoping to stay on track this year too. Is this plant in your photo with the variegated foliage: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=8291062 a Dischidia? That bloom doesn't go with that plant does it? I thought it looked like a Hoya or Dischidia ... very nice.

So many beautiful blooms, plants, birds and critters. I got lost somehow.. I am glad I found you..Happy New Year to you all.

Good luck with that New Year's resolution, Lin!

Good Morning, Isn't this Haight Ashbury? It is starting to bloom. The pic just not do justice to all the colors.

Those are gorgeous. I had one of those red hibs ( I think it was the one you posted) last winter grew 6 ft tall and bloomed all winter.

Happy New Year Debra!

GAgirl: That Hibiscus is gorgeous, love the deep maroon color of that bloom! It does look like 'Haight Ashbury'. The listings in Plant Files don't show blooms, only foliage. You should consider uploading a couple of bloom photo's: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/161676/
Your Orchid is really pretty ... so many blooms at once ... Great growing!

Well, my washing machine bit the dust yesterday ... we are trying to decide which brand/type to purchase as a replacement. I've been considering the front load type machines but can't decide. Both of my sisters have front loaders and one loves hers while the other has had lots of problems with mold/mildew/odor in hers which I do not want to deal with!

Have a great day everyone!

I was just outside on the deck and figured I'd take pictures of two Orchids that are still blooming, These two have been going strong for quite a few weeks now.

Hope this isn't a repeat. I know I posted pics of the Holiday Cactus but can't remember if I shared this one with the white/pale pink blooms. It's one of my favorites so please forgive me if I've already posted it.

Lin,
This is ONLY my opinion.....I had to buy a new washer about 2 years ago and decided on the front load one, because they are supposed to be more eco and energy friendly. Of course I do not have the top of the line, but they were not cheap ones either. I do not like them. You can only use the HE(high efficency) detergent with them, my clothes do not seem to get as clean, you can't stop it and turn it back to wash again on really dirty clothes, and yes, mine does have a mildew problem around the door that I can't get rid of. We are building a new house and those are staying here, I am buying new ones.

Sorry, got off subject, I'll try not to do it again.

Thanks for your input GAgirl, I really appreciate it. I posted on the Appliance Forum asking for feedback earlier today but so far there have been no responses. I don't think the Appliance Forum gets a lot of activity so I may not get any response there as to likes/dislikes of these front loading machines. Still waiting on my husband to be ready to head out to look at washers. The University is closed for holiday break so he isn't teaching but he's been busy on the computer with school related stuff. There are many Appliance stores nearby as well as HHGregg, Home Depot, Lowes, Sears etc. so we will probably spend all afternoon looking and trying to decide on a replacement.

Found another orchid with two blooms on it, this is a Brassavola nodosa hybrid. Not the prettiest orchid on the block but interesting in it's own way:

A friend just bought a new top loader with the front loader technology - uses less water and detergent. Don't know the brand but they are out there. My DIL leaves her, top of the line, front loader door open at all times so the mildew won't build up. However their clothes do come clean and they are so dry it takes far less time in the dryer. She is generally very pleased. Let us know what you decide, I'll be needing a new one soon also.

It is hard to tell in this photo but this vriesea is almost 2' wide and way too heavy for me to tote in and out with the weather. I bought it several years ago at a sale/talk on cold hardy broms. This one has been outside for years with no cover and it appears to have survived last month's freezing temps. Some of the leaves are severely damaged but the young leaves in the center are firm as are all the other (still) green leaves.

Now if we can only have reasonable weather for the rest of this winter I think it will be fine.

Well, we went with Samsung and ended up buying the matching dryer as well! Happy New Year to me, LOL. The appliance store had so many brands and they had a Frigidaire set with pedestals for $1600. that they kept trying to talk us into buying but my husband did some on-line research as well as talking to dealers about different brands and he liked the Samsung. He's very technically and mechanically minded and checked out stuff in the back of the machines as well as inside and hoses etc. so hopefully Samsung was the right way to go ... I'll keep you posted. My hubby also likes to dicker on prices and most places will match or better other dealers quotes nowadays so we got a good deal on the set with pedestals, I think it came out to around the same as the $1600 quote on the Frigidaire brand. Anyway, even though they had a $59.95 delivery charge with a mail in rebate, the store is less than 2 miles from us so my husband is taking his utility trailer up and picking them up. He's in the laundry room right now removing the old washer and dryer and a shelf above them to make room for the new set. I will be testing them out tonight with a load of laundry!

Back to plants! I don't guess this is considered a tropical but I think the blooms are pretty! The Scarlet Maple tree in the front yard is in full bloom right now:

There weren't any inflorescences on Aroids in lower Puna. Including Epipremnum.

Epipremnum flowers have not been observed much, outside of their native habitat.

To hopefully catch them in flower, I cruise through the lowland forests regularly, where they are dominate members of the rainforest.

Here is a close-up of Epipremnum pinnatum.

Paula, yes, it's Aristolochia gigantea and I will try and start you a piece of it but if I'm not successful I will send you some cuttings. Your Hibiscus is a real beauty.

Lin, no, that bloom does not belong to the Dischidia. That pipevine has started twining itself around it in which I had not noticed until I turned the plant around. Nice Orchids but your Oncidium Namboh Waltz is extra nice and it's good to read you got yourself a new washer and dryer;-)

Beautiful pictures Dave. Keep them coming.

Dave: Great close up shot of E. pinnatum. Now, that's my kind of holiday ... what gorgeous scenery with the blue water and palm tree. I can almost feel the breezes!

Rachel: I didn't think that was a Dischidia bloom, as I thought they usually have small flowers but it was confusing because I couldn't place it. I've never grown Pipevines and that bloom is really something neat looking, it looks huge! I got my Oncidium Namboh Waltz at Home Depot a year ago. I love the blooms of that orchid and they have a light fragrance too which makes it even more appealing.

Yep, got a new washer and dryer, husband hooked it all up and I'm testing it with the first load being a heavy king size comforter.

happy new year. i love all the tropical pictures. i haven't been on daves for a few weeks it took me awhile to catch up on all the threads.
sorry to say but it was the worst christmas ever because my 15 year old pitbull died on christmas. it has been hard on us since we have had her since she was a puppy. i am much better today because i got a chance to go out in the garden which cheered me up with all the new flowers but the garden will not be the same with out her.

Candela, so sorry to hear about your pet, I know how you feel, it just rips your heart out. The flowers do help to brighten the day. Yours are very pretty, love the orchid.

(Zone 1)

candela: My condolences on the loss of your pretty pup. It sounds like she had a long and happy life in your care. I've known many canines that have lived to the age of 12 or 13, but don't often hear of them living to the age of 15. It's obvious that she had a wonderful caring family and a great life. Having lost many critters over the years, I know this is a difficult time for you right now, but in time the hurt will ease and you will smile with happy memories of her. Maybe you can plant a special flower or tree in your garden in remembrance, to honor her? I have a corner in my backyard where we've buried many pets over the past 35 years. I sometimes plant annuals in that area and I have a bench there where I can just relax and enjoy the garden.

(Zone 1)

candela: Oh, you have many beautiful plants in your garden! I love Croton's, you are very fortunate to live where they can be grown as landscape plants. Here in Daytona Beach they have to stay in containers and need protection from cold weather during the winter. I had quite a few in pots for many years and would always move them to the back porch and cover them in blankets when we had cold nights. I lost all but one to our frigid temperatures last winter. That bromeliad bloom is very pretty and that Leopard Plant is absolutely gorgeous! I'm not familiar with that one and will have to look it up and read about it. It has pretty blooms but I really like the look of that foliage!

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)
