Hello all. I searched and searched but didn't find an exact answer so here you go.
I received an EZ Clone system as a gift. (yippee!) I would like to get a jump start on cloning boxwoods. We are well into winter and everything is dormant.
Can I take boxwood cuttings now and expect success in the EZ Clone or do I have to wait until the plant wakes up? My fantasy would be that's I'll be on my third batch by the time winter gives up. I have sufficient lights and space to keep the first two batches going after planting, (after rooting)
Thoughts?
Jim
Can I take boxwood cuttings in winter for EZ Clone?
In my plant prop class that I took this year we learned each plant has different requirements for rooting, and they dont always 'read the book' - You'd first want to know what cultivar of boxwood you have. You can then look up the 'requirements' it has as far as time of year it roots best, any auxins (IBA/IA/NAA) it responds best to, light and humidity variables. I found it fascinating that some cultivars root best at very different times of the year then there species counter parts, but that you could have some % of success almost anytime of the year. Some do best when the cultivar is growing actively and others don't.
If you cant find any info on your cultivar, let me know and I can try my library access at school to see if they have any more info that its not as readily available over the internet.
Good luck, and most importantly - Have Fun!
