CLOSED: ID on a fly, please.
This is a hover/flower fly (Diptera: Syrphidae), an extremely large family with thousands of species.
Upon further review, I was mistaken in my initial assessment; I looked too hastily, and mistook an area of refraction on the wing for the presence of a 'spurious vein' which is diagnostic for the family Syrphidae. I should have been more suspicious of the hairs on the abdomen, which are not characteristic for that family. This specimen is instead a bee fly (Diptera: Bombyliidae) in the genus Villa - see http://tinyurl.com/236t3q2 for an example.
Not a problem! I have corrected my ID's to villa. sp.
Thanks for all your help!
Bob
