Hi everyone,
Please identify this bug for me. My family and I found it very strange that it was the same colour as its surrounding objects. And it was definitely real (we thought for a while that it was a fake bug, painted that colour!) as we watched it walk around.
See the picture.
Thanks!
Amy
What is this strange beetle? Found in Kruger Park (S.Africa)
This is a long- horned wood-boring beetle (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) in the subfamily Lamiinae; it appears to be one of the subspecies of Prosopocera lactator - see http://tinyurl.com/29m99sc for an example.
Great, thanks so much! Do you know why we found it attached to objects of its same colour? Is it always trying to camouflage?
Good question. many beetles in this family have colour patterns that make it difficult to discern them against their background, while others have bright patterns that seem to advertise their presence.
