does anyone recognise this spider? it's very distinctive with a chocolate body and cream stripe down it's side.

this is one of Jane's fly catching friends.

Was it on water plants? Does it have spots on it's abdomen? It could be a spotted fishing spider. They are brown with lengthwise stripes.

Calalily you are 100% correct. I sent the photo to the entimology dept of the Ulster Museum.

it's a Raft Spider aka Fishing Spider Dolomedes fimbraitus. they sit at the edge of ponds and lakes waiting for tell-tale ripples. they dash out and grab the prey even if it is underwater.

this one was on a climbing Dicentra growing at the base of Jane's conservatory. it was 50 yards or so away from her nearest pond.
