Morello cherry lupines

I'm a bit confused about conflicting information on sowing lupines. One gardening magazine or book stated that the seed needed to be "nicked" at one end and soaked for a specific time frame before planting; another said Mother Nature takes care of all of that when they are outside in milk jugs/containers for the winter months. I'd like to hear from gardeners who have grown lupines what their experiences have been.

I've grow Lupine Morello Cherry. It's a beautiful variety. I had a good germination rate without nicking or soaking the seeds.

I've also had good germination with it using the wintersowing methods. I'll say that it came up like crazy, transplanted well...but as suspected withered in our southern heat. Ah, well...

Two yrs ago I tried nicking my lupine seeds and germination was poor.
This yr I had excellent germination without nicking.
Im talking Russell variety, and sowed in late spring, so not exactly the same scenario as yours, but from this experience I will not nick any lupine seeds in the future.

Lupines have become one of my very favorite plants!

Lupine don't live very long, so I winter sow some every year. I too have good luck transplanting them. They're definitely worth the little work they cause.
